this is exactly what it’s like to hear as a deaf person

i hear you, but i don’t understand you. one letter can change the entire meaning of a sentence, and repeating over and over doesn’t always help. instead, try rephrasing so i’m not getting stuck on the same thing.

part of my annual #HearingExam consists of a #SpeechRecognition portion where my #Audiologist says a list of words to me (with her mouth covered so i can’t #Lipread) and i have to repeat what i hear back to her. very often i know that the word i’m repeating back isn’t correct, but i still have to say what my first instinct is 😂

tests like these really illustrate how important lipreading and context are for a #Deaf person: i might not hear every word, but if i’m able to hear a decent amount of them in context it’s easier for me to piece together what is actually said. by @ktnlife

what other questions do you have about #Captions or #DigitalAccessibility?

i can’t begin to tell you how many times i was either so uncomfortable at practice because i was so hot in a full jacket or completely lost because i had to take my hearing aids out to protect them and i had to deal with not being able to hear.

finding a thin fleece headband was such a lifesaver and i still use them today on rainy walks with echo!!
