Lake Travis isn’t just our favorite place to boat, swim, and watch the sunset — it’s a giant water-storage reservoir. 🏗️ The system that makes it possible: The Highland Lakes
Back in the 1930s and ‘40s, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) — working with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation — tamed the flood-and-drought-prone Colorado River (the Texas one 😉) by building a chain of six dams. They generate hydroelectric power, control flooding, and store water for the dry years:
⚡ Buchanan Dam — 1938 ⚡ Inks Dam — 1938 ⚡ Tom Miller Dam — 1940 ⚡ Mansfield Dam — 1942 (originally Marshall Ford Dam — and the one that forms Lake Travis!) ⚡ Wirtz Dam — 1951 ⚡ Max Starcke Dam — 1951
