Your sign to consider going to France, and your sign to DEFINITELY buy a FujiFilm 📷

In preparation for France, we bought a cheaper used FujiFilm. Figuring out how to work it was a lot like the excitement of being a little kid with a new toy. And in France, I quickly found that the camera can capture stunning images of rays of light. Here are some rays of light visiting France at the same time as us 🇫🇷 ⛪️

Remember folks: “In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light.” so said Hans Hoffman ✨ by @kuya_canyen

Shining through the snowy night,
house lamp posts and the
warm kitchen light in the window
glow
at the end of the street.
I don’t live here;
I haven’t lived here for a long time,
but I bet my key will always work.

Cluttered house full of spirit;
people running around making dinner,
doing laundry,
talking,
visiting,
resting,
scrolling,
being alive, with style.

Someone always sits us down to
play a game, like
Mario Kart or
cards or,
Something they just made up.
“You’re ass at this game :(“
says one of us.
“Quiet”
says someone else.
Yelling,
hands flying,
swatting,
getting first place,
winning,
losing,
laughing,
laughing,
laughing.
Glad.

These days I wonder if
love
is just this:
to miss someone you still have —
to hope to meet someone
you’ve always known.

One iced brown sugar cinnamon,
one oat milk latte,
one banana flavored white chocolate mocha,
and one iced chai.

that’s better than
having everything ❤️ by @kuya_canyen

I feel more like a Vermonter than I feel like an American. And I’m not a Vermonter.

Why, you may ask, did I wait until many, many moons after fall to post about my lovely yearly pilgrimage to Vermont? Well, I was waiting in case perchance John Instagram @instagram would give my phone the rare power to post more than 10 photos, but I was rebuffed
😞 a part 2 post may be coming. Love y’all be well.

In New England, I know Summer is over when the cardinals suddenly disappear.

The last cardinal I saw this season was on a nature trail around the corner from my apartment. It appeared to be hiding in the foliage of a small tree, furtive but attentive, on the lookout for something. It was Friday, September 28th — I haven’t seen another cardinal since then.

Before that sighting, the last cardinal I saw was on September 13th. In the summer, I see cardinals every day, in contrast to the autumn when weeks can go by between sightings. The one I saw on the 13th was a female — dusty golden brown, high up in a tree next to a parking garage, and it chirped like a bright, chiming bell. Females are rarer and harder to spot in these parts than males, with their blazing red hues and wild feather mohawks.

When I was a kid, I decided, for some reason, that cardinals were my favorite bird. This even though I had never seen one in-person, and didn’t even care about birds. Even though they’re tiny, something about their striking head plumage made them look heroic, like little fighters. When we moved to Connecticut, I was shocked to see one on a fence outside my office window, and even more excited to find out that there are practically swarms of them in New Haven. One time, a cardinal and I whistled back and forth at each other for about 10 minutes.

In American folklore, these birds are a sign of getting a message from the dead. The most common folktale is that when a loved one dies, cardinals are likely to visit you. After I learned this, I would always think about loved ones passed away when I saw a cardinal, and who that cardinal possibly was, and why. Was the last cardinal I saw actually my grandpa-in-law, who chain-smoked and lived to 91, come to ask about my trip to Japan, a place he was always fascinated by? Was it my late great-uncle Pimi, come to tell me one last ridiculous story, which was probably a lie, and then fly off laughing, like an angel or a madman? Was it one of the late parents of so many of my friends, asking that I check on them? Or someone close I haven’t realized has passed on?

Happy Birthday to my person 🥰 🏜️🐷 by @kuya_canyen

We visited the lovely town of Visby Sweden, and it has quickly become a favorite place of ours!

I previously knew that the geography and scenery of Sweden was the inspiration of the fictional town of Kokiro in the movie “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, but I recently learned that the town of Visby (along with Stockholm) was used as an inspiration for the setting specifically! Miyazaki also drew inspiration from parts of France and the Mediterranean. Naturally, music from the movie was stuck in my head our whole time there, so I decided to make this video to document our day trip there 🇸🇪
