✨ Presenting Experience Chinatown 2026 mural: “Dance of the Lions” by Emily Kwong @kwongster_k located at Q Restaurant @qrestaurantboston at 660 Washington St, Boston. This year, the muralists responded to the prompt, “What makes Chinatown abundant?” ✨ Emily shares, “Chinatown’s abundance is found in the traditions that survive across generations. Lion dancers embody more than celebration—they represent resilience, protection, and the passing of culture through movement, ritual, and community.” Experience Chinatown is where you can discover a new take on Asian American Cultures. See, hear, create, and connect. Together, celebrate the rich cultural fabric of Boston Chinatown through free creative activities for all. #ExperienceChinatown Live performances and activities: Saturday, September 26 from 11-3 PM (Rain date Sunday, 9/27). When my grandfather passed in January of this year we had found a collection of photos. Not just of my siblings and I but when he first came here, his time overseas with the British navy, and a few of my grandmother and her mother from another lifetime ago in Southern China, this being when she was 12-13 years old. My mama chided him for keeping them, but they hold so much. With the theme for this year’s murals being “Roots”, I thought about how much she sacrificed to bring our family over for a fuller life. I’m the recipient of all the work and effort the people before me, all the hope they had that the next generation would be able to live a better life. In that way, I’m a nesting doll of all these places and people that worked to get me to this point. I am a Matrosky doll. . #art #artist #artistoninstagram #salem #salemartist #salemart #boston #bostonart #mural #neon #puntourbanartmuseum #roots #muralist by @kwongster_k

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:Emily Kwong @Kwongster_k “Emily, a self-taught painter, has been creating art since she was five. Her work is figurative and vibrant, with color and form working together to express the emotions she wants to convey. For Emily, art is a way to communicate without words, and it has become as natural to her as writing. ” Cheer Emily on November 5th at the next Art Battle Boston 7-10 @mightysquirrelfenway ! Today, we had the pleasure of bringing more color and life to Foster Street, in Peabody, as part of the preparations for the Peabody Festival taking place later this month. 🌸🌿 This year, the planters will become even more special, as each invited artist will paint and personalize one, bringing together landscaping, art, and creativity throughout the city. We are proud to be part of the Peabody community and to contribute our work to making our city even more beautiful and welcoming. @ifestpeabody @kwongster_k @peabodyareachamber @peabodystdi by @kwongster_k
What an experience! If you told me that I’d be painting a mural in Chinatown a year ago I would have laughed and told you they were my 3rd rejection that month- ouch! But I’ve really made a change and realized how much art brings me back to reality- that yeah I can do anything I put my mind to. That opportunity happen for a reason and this was the year for that. The theme this year was what made Chinatown so abundant- and I’d love to share that story with yall. “Tradition To me, Chinatown’s abundance is found in the traditions that survive across generations. Lion dancers embody more than celebration—they represent resilience, protection, and the passing of culture through movement, ritual, and community. My grandparents echoed this sentiment as they would cart my sisters and me into Chinatown for food and celebration, gathering with family and friends who were family in every sense of the word—Aunties and Uncles alike. Among the festivities were quieter rituals: wearing lucky colors, hanging charms for protection, and arranging objects to welcome prosperity. These small acts carried stories of a home thousands of miles away. As my family has changed, those traditions remain. Abundance is not measured by what we own, but by what we inherit and choose to carry forward. Chinatown thrives because it preserves these memories, allowing culture to endure through the people who continue to practice, celebrate, and share it.” Thank you @paoartscenter for this absolutely wonderful opportunity, huge shout out to the staff, fellow artists, and the volunteers who helped keep my sanity and kept me focused! #art #mural #liondancers #chinatownboston #chinatown by @kwongster_k
