The sealing of Akkorokamui
Size:11’x30’
Materials: Acrylic paint on wall
2026
Brandon Vargas and Kyla Best

Akkorokamui is a giant red octopus from the Ainu people’s folklore in Hokkaido.
In this mural, it’s met by crabs up in arms, with various weapons fighting back.

The piece is partially inspired by The Walrus and the Carpenter, from 1951’s Alice in Wonderland and a long-standing fascination with predator/prey relationships, and the strangely intimate violence of how octopuses eat crabs, cracking them open with their beaks and a jealousy that they get to do that.

‘The Sealing of Akkorokamui’ is located at Odd Rabbit sushi restaurant in Boulder.
Opening this weekend, April 30th. Please go check them out!

Huge thanks to @oddrabbit.boulder for being lovely to work with and allowing us to be creative with the direction of these artworks. by @kylacecilia

To quote the lady I made this for “top 5 anime noses I’d ride”. Buggy from One Piece. 6”x6” oil in wood panel. Pompom for scale. by @kylacecilia

Acrylic on canvas 30”x40” I really wish I could go on a bike ride right now.
I ride my bike on the cherry creek trail sometimes daily. I listen to music and try to cope with things. It became a really special place to me. I started this painting before my accident but paused for a number of months. I got ran over by an suv while on my bicycle. I won’t be able to bike for a while. It’s hard not having that outlet. It feels weird finishing the painting now. (My bad for the super cheesy song) by @kylacecilia

Attended this workshop at Emmanuel Gallery. We made stencils with Jan Hayworth of some special arts administrators in the Denver community 💕. She translated these into this beautiful mural up on the side of the Buell Theatre. I of course had to choose Rebi’s portrait to stencil. by @kylacecilia
