Exhibited in the show süperendişe—meaning “superanxiety” in Turkish—at Kiralık Depo,“futuredays” is a series of symbolically dense, layered drawings that reflect on speculative futures and embodied unease rooted in wishful anticipation.

The series draws from a late-19th-century set of paper cards envisioning the year 2000 through scenes of technological advancement. Commissioned by the French toy manufacturer Armand Gervais for the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and illustrated by Jean-Marc Côté, the cards were first distributed in cigarette packs before later circulating as postcards.

By combining abstracted, night-vision-like re-renderings of these speculative scenes, AI-generated anatomical fragments rendered in fleshy tones, asemic symbols reminiscent of crop circles borrowed from the 1996 animation segment Prometheus and Bob, and chicken-foot hangers emerging from custom paddings evocative of a soft-room in a mental institution, the series evokes the entangled nature of temporality, anticipation, nostalgia, and inevitability—unfolding in space like a subdued fever dream. 📸: @zeynepfiratphotos by @yuzonbir.space

Kiralık Depo is very excited to announce ‘süperendişe’, a duo exhibition of new works by artists Lalin Mercan and Can Yıldırım. The exhibition brings together installation, video, sculpture and drawing exploring individual and collective sources of unease and coping reflexes. Taking inspiration from niche media outlets, popular consumer culture, mechanisms of control and fabricated desires, ‘süperendişe’ circles around its subject matter and imitates the entangled relationship between cause and effect.

The opening is on Thursday, January 23rd, from 17:00 to 20:00. Hope to see you there!! :-)

Can Yıldırım (b.1995) received his BFA from Interdisciplinary Sculpture department at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2017. Previous shows include Neo Ordinary, 9th Çanakkale Biennial MAHAL(2024); Capriole Art Week, Lecce, IT (2023); Don’t Worry We’re Side By Side There Are No Giants, Nor Their Shoulders, IMÇ 5533, TR (2021) among others.

Lalin Mercan (b.1992) attended Goldsmiths University where she studied BA Fine Art. Previous shows include Sense of Earth, Barbare Studios, Tekirdağ (2024); Home, na+ctrl, Barınhan, İstanbul (2024), Body Art Resistance, Karşı Sanat, İstanbul (2023) among others. taken in Istanbul, Turkey by @yuzonbir.space
