Public green spaces shape how a city feels and functions every day. Through the Pratiti Initiative, a visionary collaboration between Landscape India @landscapeindia and the UNM Foundation (the philanthropic arm of Torrent Group) @unm_foundation , urban parks in cities like Ahmedabad are being completely transformed.

Our group from Outlandish Tours @outlandishventures , led by Fleur Flannery, was lucky enough to visit three spectacular parks within the city: The Heritage Park, Victoria Gardens, and Sardar Bagh—all brilliantly created by the studio of Landscape India. Guided through these urban oases by horticulturist Santosh Yadav @santosh_thinks_native and Dipil Damodaran from the UNM Foundation, we were briefed on the incredible conversion of these land spaces from former waste areas into deeply usable, peaceful green environments. Our guides beautifully highlighted how function, form, botanical diversity, and sculptural elements all seamlessly come together.

As landscape architect Aniket Bhagwat of Landscape India notes, a park’s success isn’t just about raw foot traffic—it is about the length of time people spend there, the freedom of human expression allowed, and the community’s emotional connection to the land.

For me, the standout highlights included:
* Sanctuary Through Continuity: The deliberate consistency of design across all three parks offered an instant sense of peace and predictability, serving as a calming antidote to the completely variable and inconsistent hustle of the city just outside the gates.
* Material Harmony: The beautiful continuity of recycled, crushed red brick pathways and cohesive seating arrangements that tied the different spaces together.
* Striking Contrasts: The rich horticultural layers of the landscape contrasting vividly against the warm, earthy tones of the red paths.
* Community-Centric Scale: The thoughtful design of gathering spaces that effortlessly cater to meetings on various scales within all the parks. by @landscapeindia

On a large site where one has to imagine orchards / forests / fields / grass lands / built structures / water / vegetable patch’s / animal coops / permaculture areas / grazing areas / open grounds to use / meadows - how does one imagine it - here are 4 abstract models that examine and study possibilities /of movement / of space / of sight lines / of contained experiences / of logic of land / of coherence . Four Physical models that one can see and feel and study .How did we decide these models ? That’s another story for another day- but it was pixelated sketches that broke the site into small grids and tested the ideas that lead to these models #models #landscapearchitecture #planning#nature #grain by @landscapeindia
