samantha shannon - the song rising (bone season #3)
4.5 stars ★★★★½

i really liked this third instalment of the bone season series !!! in this slower and shorter part, i had time to really appreciate the characters and their interactions which one another. and the end was so action-packed that i couldn't put the book down!! there were so many high stakes and revelations - i can't wait to read the next books🤩

brought this for my night shifts in the ICU as a distraction while waiting to be called - but i was so invested i slept a little later each night to read just one more chapter🤭

on another note, paige is such a strong main character, i really admire her and samantha shannon for portraying her so well. need more personalities like hers in fantasy books

kafka - investigations of a dog
3.5 stars ★★★½

a short story from kafka i'd never of but found in a bookstore in tallinn last summer - and i'm glad i bought it!
it's a very interesting concept to write from the point of view of a dog, and especially coming from kafka, with his reputed "strange" and dreamy writing style.
this was mostly philosophical without any real plot or actions, so i had a little trouble following the narrator's plan. but the concept was well executed overall and i recommend this short but fun read.

when you start to feel like you might have too many objects made from the same painting...🎨

enjoy a photo dump of my last reads, mostly french classics - and a portrait that caught my attention in paris during my last trip there📸

tolstoy - the death of ivan ilyich
3.5 stars ★★★½

this short story was my first time reading tolstoy, and it was very interesting.

though i had trouble following the story at first, i liked the overall vibes and the themes reminded me a lot of the trial by kafka, where the main character is constantly focused on the finality of things, more precisely anxious towards the end of his - social or physical - life.
the main character was voluntarily unlikeable, but i think that's what made the read a bit harder for me. i still recommend if you're looking to start somewhere with tolstoy since it's very short and accessible !!

enjoy this photoshoot of l'astrée, a french novel from the 17th century i read during a trip to paris.

how fun is it that only the abridged edition exists? the book was so long that it was published in 6 parts - it has often been called "the novel of novels".

the book has barely ever been translated into english, but the main storyline is the disappearance of astrée, and céladon, her lover, going into different quests in order to find her - all in a bucolic setting, typical of "pastoral" novels at this time.

oscar wilde - salomé
5 stars ★★★★★

loved loved loved this !!!
i'd wanted to read salomé for so long, and have the privilege of being able to read it in its original language - when i finally found it, i couldn't help but reading it in one sitting after a night at the opera.

the story of salomé is already well-known, and oscar wilde wrote it beautifully - it was very dreamy, surrealistic and i loved that aspect of the story. i only wish it were a bit longer.

it was my first oscar wilde play and now i'm even more curious to discover his other works!

[comeback post]

since my last post, i sadly haven't had time to read as much as i used to :/ (see my #GoodreadsYearInBooks, i think the goal was around 40🙄)
i still managed to capture a few cool moments, spent re-reading parts of my favourite books or getting lost in second-hand bookshops🤭

so enjoy this as i prepare my review of villette, my first read of 2026 - spoiler : i liked it a lot!🤩 by @lapvonasurvivor

inventing the frankenstein tag for you, with the classic itself and a retelling i loved by @c_e_mcgill !!!

you can find the review if you scroll a bit down my feed, but it's basically a feminist and sapphic retelling of frankenstein with a touch of murder aka the PERFECT COMBO - one of my favourite reads of 2024

i heard the new frankenstein movie is out on netflix???? so now is the best time to (re)read both of these masterpieces🫶🏼

i should definitely watch the movie but i'm always afraid of hating book adaptations - have you seen it and if so, did you like it? please tell me in the comments !!

holly jackson - not quite dead yet
4.25 stars ★★★★¼

what an INSANE book.
the premise was already crazy to begin with - i feel like it's a must read for anyone who loves thrillers and murder mysteries as it's a concept that's not been done before, at least to my knowledge. can you imagine a book where the main characte has to solve her own murder?
jet was so well written, she was the best main character for this type of story. her relationship with billy was very realistic and unique, i loved it.

about the mystery itself, i managed to find the killer (!!!!!!) for the first time in a holly jackson book - i am SO proud of myself and also so glad that the author wrote it in such a way that you could guess the murderer with all the clues laid out, if you paid the right amount of attention.
it felt very satisfying and i loved the story surrounding jet's murder and how it was building up slowly until the final findings.

it was definitely different from her other books, and even though i mostly enjoy adult crime novels i feel like holly jackson's best skills show when writing ya. i especially enjoy books based on their setting, and there wasn't much detail about that here - compared to agggtm, for example.
another slight downside is that i didn't feel as scared as i did when reading her other books. this felt more suspense than thriller, and i'm usually expecting to shit my pants when reading a holly jackson book👻👻 but that might be just me🫡

this is also the best read for spooky season as the first chapter starts on halloween night, followed by the first week of november throughout the rest of the book - now is the perfect time to read it if you haven't already!

agustina bazterrica - 19 claws and a black bird
5 stars ★★★★★

while i didn't fully connect with tender is the flesh - unpopular opinion - i absolutely ADORED this short story collection!!

it was very different from bazterrica's first novel, and i read a lot of mixed reviews for this book. but i personally loved every story!

i connected way more with the themes the author developed, all in subtelty, with powerful imagery and intriguing stories. i usually have trouble keeping up with short story collections but this one was impressive, i liked the writing a lot and it was full of that weird lit vibe i'm always on the look for.

i thought the pacing was also perfect, i read this in 2 days during a week-end trip to finland (photodump included :)))

if you follow me, you will probably love this book - read it!!!!
also, how lucky was i to get my hands on this signed edition totally by chance during my last trip to edinburgh?? i love it so much😩😩
