With A Cherry On Top | 88” x 56” x 113”

Workshop for Art Research and Practice | Spring 2026

“With A Cherry On Top” takes the form of a human hand holding a melting ice cream cone topped with a bright cherry. Ice cream is typically associated with happiness, comfort, and indulgence, which takes part in why we chose it as the central form of the piece. It is also familiar - a refreshing treat many grow up around and associate with simple moments of enjoyment. The ice cream cone parallels the way we often think about the world itself: as something stable and comforting, much like a childhood treat that feels constant and reliable.

In our monument, however, the ‘ice cream’ is in the form of a globe, melting and gradually losing its shape, symbolizing the slow deterioration of the world. This melting acts as a metaphor for larger environmental issues, particularly global warming and the overwhelming amount of waste that continues to damage the planet. The texture that the globe takes on alludes to the extraordinary amounts of pollution and waste that makes up our world today. Ice cream, which normally feels lighthearted and enjoyable instead becomes unstable and temporary in “With A Cherry On Top”. Additionally, the human hand contributes to the idea that humans have much control over many of these issues, as well as their perspectives on them and what they choose to perceive from reality.

The cherry topper itself represents the idea of sugarcoating. The phrase ‘cherry on top’ represents the way people often distract themselves from serious global problems with small, pleasant additions that make things look better on the surface. Instead of addressing the deeper issues, the ‘cherry on top’ becomes a way of covering them up or making them easier to ignore while these issues continue to worsen. by @laurensargentdesign
