We want to thank @bhmbizalliance for including @lawsonstatecc at today's HBCU Business Breakfast in Birmingham.

Today's event provided a reminder to us of what we will always continue to work for: access, opportunity, and progress. The breakfast also provided the chance to hear input from students, college presidents, and economic development leaders, as HBCCs and HBCUs partner to promote home-grown talent and keep exceptional graduates in Alabama.

Lawson State Community College and our esteemed President, Dr. Cynthia Anthony, recently took part in the Alabama Women's Roundtable empowerment luncheon.

Women leaders from across Birmingham spoke on the themes of embracing risk, pursuing bold leadership, civic engagement, voting privileges, and mentoring the next generation of young women.

Dr. Anthony spoke on the importance of maintaining her GRIP: keeping God first, Respecting yourself and others, maintaining Integrity in all things, and having Professionalism and poise in all efforts.

@repterriasewell and @councilortate_d9 were also on hand to emphasize the critical importance of voting and understanding policy.

We at @lawsonstatecc could not be prouder to be present at the kickoff of "Historically Black," the new exhibit at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute launching during Magic City Classic Week!

Along with Alabama's 13 other historically black colleges, universities and community colleges, @lawsonstatecc is set to receive the 2026 Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award, the first time the award has gone to institutions rather than an individual.

Coming up on Wednesday, @triosss_lawsonstate will be hosting the Black Tie Pop-Up Shop, where students will have the opportunity to not only receive free black neckties (while they last), but also learn how to properly tie them!

We certainly hope you all can join us as students will not only have some fun, but also learn a life skill that will serve them long well long after @lawsonstatecc!

Members of @phithetakappa were able to take part in an exciting adventure in leadership and team building at the beautiful 4-H Center in Columbiana, AL.

Throughout the retreat, students were encouraged to say "yes" to opportunities that could change their lives as they enjoyed a bonfire and costume contest and challenged themselves on an obstacle course! by @lawsonstatecc

There is nothing like our students here at @lawsonstatecc being able to speak with our leadership on campus!

They had the opportunity to speak with our Dean of Students Cyrus Vance about some of the current issues on campus, while sharing their ideas about how to make our institution bigger for the next generation of incoming students.

We cannot do what we do here at Lawson State Community College without the students, and are eternally grateful for what they provide to us!

We know next week is @magiccityclassic but join @lawsonstatecc next Wednesday October 28 for some tailgating activities hosted by @triosss_lawsonstate!

The tailgate will be held on our Birmingham campus from 12-2 PM in front of the Academic Success Center Auditorium. Our tailgate will be an educational and cultural enrichment experience celebrating HBCU pride, tradition, and the excitement surrounding @magiccityclassic

The event will bring together HBCU representatives, Greek-letter organizations, community partners, and local businesses while connecting students with transfer opportunities, scholarships, academic programs, and valuable resources to support their continued educational journeys.

Attendees are encouraged to rep their HBCU pride by wearing their favorite HBCU shirts, colors, or paraphernalia! We look forward to seeing everyone next week!
