This paper examines how the Matilda Effect, the systemic miscrediting and erasure of women’s intellectual contributions, shapes the psychological development of girls and the cultural narratives that define “brilliance.” Drawing on historical case studies, research on adolescent self-concept, and feminist epistemology, the analysis traces how patterns of undervaluation in scientific and intellectual history translate into internalized self-doubt, restricted aspirations, and the normalization of male-centered recognition. The paper argues that the Matilda Effect is not only a historiographical problem but also a developmental one: when girls grow up in environments where women’s achievements are minimized or reassigned, their sense of intellectual agency is structurally weakened. Through a conceptual and literature-based methodology, the study maps the mechanisms by which miscrediting becomes a psychological script, influencing motivation, risk-taking, and perceptions of legitimacy. By integrating insights from psychology, sociology, and the philosophy of knowledge, the paper illustrates how the Matilda Effect reproduces epistemic injustice across generations. The conclusion calls for educational and cultural interventions that reconfigure recognition as a formative resource for girls’ intellectual identity.
