PROJECT NOTES /04 — BINOMIO

In Binomio, Camilla Radaelli explores the relationship between elements that can accord or oppose one another: rigour and plasticity, symmetry and irregularity, contrast and affinity.

The project develops through a sequence of studies in which stones, colour, rhythm and ornament become part of an evolving formal language. Different possibilities are tested before converging in Collier onde.

Here, the relationship between the two languages becomes active. Coloured enamelled waves distort the pavé structure; the stones respond to colour, while red elements emerge through contrast. In other studies, the relationship is reversed: the ordered structure of the pavé determines the fluid movement of the overlapping enamelled forms.

Rather than simply placing opposites side by side, Binomio investigates what happens when they begin to influence one another.

COLLECTION NOTES /03

One artwork. Different ways of thinking.

This third edition explores how a single visual reference can open multiple directions in jewellery design.

Starting from Untitled (1984) by Jean-Michel Basquiat, part of the Collezione Roberto Casamonti in Florence, LAO student Milo Revilla investigated the relationship between graphic signs, colour, composition and jewellery structures.

His research took two directions: an exploration of forms generated with AI and a hand-drawn study of an openable jewellery structure.

Rather than treating AI-generated images as finished designs, the exercise used them to explore formal possibilities within a broader creative process.

The outcome is not a finished piece of jewellery, but a record of observation, experimentation and design thinking.

One reference. More than one possible interpretation.

A detail. A material. An unexpected gesture.

Sometimes, a second look is where a new idea begins.

Dream and/or Reality✨

Where does the dream end and reality begin? And what happens when a sudden awakening brings us abruptly back down to earth?

This is the reflection at the heart of the 2026 Casato Prime Donne Award, interpreted by four young artists from LAO @le_arti_orafe in Florence through jewellery creations exploring the boundary between imagination and reality.

The Young Talents Incubator, the Award’s space dedicated to emerging talent, gives their work a voice and offers an opportunity to turn a dream into something tangible.

Because even when reality takes us by surprise, continuing to dream is the first step towards changing it. 🤍 by @le_arti_orafe

We meet, we listen, we begin.
From course introductions to the first moments at the bench, a new academic year takes shape at LAO.

Welcome to our new students, and welcome back to those continuing their journey.

Light, facets, depth. Just watercolour.
At LAO, learning to paint a gemstone starts with learning to see it.

Luce, faccette, profondità. Solo acquerello.
Alla LAO, imparare a dipingere una gemma comincia dall’imparare a guardarla.
