Here are images and video of the Variegated Flutterer (Rhyothemis variegata), also known as the Common Picture Wing. It is often found in South Asia and the subtropical Himalayan foothills, closely mimicking the amber-and-black pattern of a Halloween pennant. . But it is not mimicking Halloween pennant at all, but is a novel case of Convergent Evolution. Wherein 2 unrelated family members evolved similar traits over a period of time in different biomes, just because they had similar environmental stresses. Here the mimicking both the 2 dragon flys are doing are of venomous butterfly …. So as to distract the predators from eating them. Second adaptation both these members made was thermo regulation. While the black in the wings absorb heat for colder temps, the vibrant variegated wings also when held up to an angle prevents overheating and gives shade to thorax under peak temps in day time. Now it’s monsoon, and they are pretty jolly. They may even befriend you and play with you haha…. They are very playful and full or character … hehe Only thing they detest is a human predator going around to catch them for DNA test( where they presumably grind this baby to ashes) or trying to extract its colour to sell in priced markets… #variegatedflutterer #commonpicturewing #dragonfly #convergentevolution #halloweenpennant by @leaf_treasury
Don’t cross this bridge , my mother said … The forest in front is full of giant Lizards and snakes… People get lost all the times in these hills… Don’t cross the old bridge, over Yamuna/Tons .. my mother said. I saw many, many cross the bridge daily.. Take many pics of their loved ones on a daily.. But keeping the tradition, I never did the unholy.. Turns out she was right, when I crossed the bridge for first time… slowly. I was greated by the biggest Lizard at the first pit stop… Ran it away from me into the wilderness … Than came the yam, the mountain grass and a few lovely snakes.. I wasn’t ready for this kind of welcoming… But at last my feet went still.. I saw Begonia Rex and painted Begonia growing wildly .. In the bed of luminescent moss.. I was transfixed, like a moth… Wanted to spend my eternity in this wild jungle.. Then came the voice unheard… We have made the deal to never cross this bridge.. I was only a guest for a few minutes.. May very well whole world come here for what not.. But we are still not allowed here, for better or worse. Begonia Rex and Painted Begonia in the wild. No I did not took it to home, or disturbed the bed or natural setting … I believe it’s unethical to do so… In any setting.. let the wilderness grow for a few more years… the plant stock for business is full and enough everywhere….be ethical, be cool and be less scary ….for you are a plant lover not a trader my dear. #begoniarex #paintedbegonia #begonia #naturalhabitat #habitats by @leaf_treasury
