It’s pub date.

My inner child has never felt safer, more seen, more at ease.

That’s because of you all. Thank you. I love you. (Couldn’t tag everyone, obviously.)

Onwards. ✨ by @leahsoojinkim

It’s not hard. Children must be protected. If someone commits a crime, you don’t kill that person’s child.

I saw a 9yo boy — Adam — get shot by a sniper and die. I saw a 3yo girl — Reem — dead from a bombing, in her grandfather’s arms. I saw the blurred video of newborns that were left alone to starve to death.

I have a 9yo boy.
I have a 3yo girl.
I am a mother.
I am a human being.

What is happening right now to the children in Palestine is inhumane, unconscionable, unjustifiable, and simply — evil.

I obviously don’t have the answers to how to solve the layers and history of injustices, traumas, crimes, and hate — done by and to all militant and imperialist parties involved — but it is not hard to know that children should be protected.

If I happen to see any child who might trip and fall, I instinctively gasp and reach out to help them. Isn’t this simply part of our wiring?

In this NBN episode, I speak with Leah Kim about her powerful book, Mom, Unfiltered: Maternal Mental Health and Finding Freedom Through Motherhood (Bloomsbury, 2026).

A deeply personal examination of the dire state of our maternal and postpartum care for mothers.

For expecting and new parents, too often the care is so focused on a healthy baby that the mother’s physical and mental needs are overlooked. Mothers face intense pressure to have the perfect birth plan, breastfeed with ease, and immediately bond with their baby. Unfortunately, these expectations can lead to anxiety, depression, and overwhelm. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In Mom, Unfiltered: Maternal Mental Health and Finding Freedom Through Motherhood, Leah Kim explores her own pregnancy and early motherhood experience as a person of the global majority, the ways society fails new mothers, the mental health struggles of expecting and new mothers, the systemic neglect in care for mothers with marginalized identities, and how motherhood can be the inspiration for getting help and healing. Her story, enhanced with expert interviews, valuable resources, and the testimonies of other mothers, not only illuminates the impact of insufficient maternal care but also shows readers what can be done to improve care for mothers.Mom, Unfilteredis profoundly personal and brutally honest, yet it is ultimately deeply hopeful. It is about survival and growth, an invitation to move beyond our current social, cultural, and familial realities to support mothers in a meaningful way-physically, mentally, and spiritually.

“It’s critical to us that we honor our children’s dual identities: Korean American and British. But it can create an uncomfortable distance: I’m in charge of the Korean piece, he’s in charge of the British component. It leaves us focusing on separate things—things we cannot easily grasp about each other.”

Blessed to have the most amazing mothers in my life 💗 by @leahsoojinkim

They say publishing a book is a birth. And sure enough, I feel like I’m navigating postpartum. Becoming a first time author is not dissimilar to becoming a first time mom in that I couldn’t know how it would feel until it was here, there are lows and there are highs, and so many unexpected surprises.

They say that motherhood is not for the weary. Neither is writing a book. (Still working out the calculus, then, of having written a book about motherhood… 😮‍💨) (barely passed Calculus btw, and I was an Econ major, wut.)
