How to Actually Start Public Speaking (Even If You Have No Idea Where to Begin) 🎤

Most people think great speakers are born with confidence.

They’re not. They’re built through consistent practice.

If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect time” to start speaking, this is your sign to begin today.

1. Start Small, Not Big

Forget the stage for now. Start with a 30–60 second speech.

Practice alone, then with one or two friends. Confidence grows through repetition, not pressure.

2. Focus on One Core Message

Don’t try to say everything. Every speech should have one takeaway your audience remembers.

Ask yourself:
“If they remember just one thing, what should it be?

3. Record Yourself

Don’t just rehearse record. Watch your pace, filler words, eye contact, facial expressions, and body language. Self-awareness is the fastest path to improvement.

Want to sound more confident? Slow down.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when speaking is rushing through their words.

When you speak too fast, people have to work harder to understand you. And when your audience is struggling to keep up, your message can lose credibility.

A slightly slower pace makes your ideas easier to follow. It also creates the impression of confidence, clarity, and authority.

The next time you’re in an important meeting, presentation, or conversation:

• Take a deep breath.
• Pause before your next point.
• Speak just a little slower than feels natural.

Remember: A calm pace reflects a calm mind.

I used to speak incredibly fast whenever I was nervous. I believed speaking quickly would make me sound smarter. In reality, it made my message harder to follow.

The biggest shift happened when I slowed down. People listened more, understood more, and trusted what I had to say.

Sometimes, confidence isn’t about speaking more—it’s about giving your words the space they deserve.

📚 Research also suggests that when information is easier to process, people are more likely to perceive the speaker as credible and confident.

Want to be remembered in every meeting?

Stop trying to speak more start speaking at the right moments.

Psychology tells us that people are most likely to remember what they hear at the beginning and end of a conversation. This is called the Serial Position Effect.

So the next time you’re in a meeting:

• Start with a thoughtful question or a valuable insight.
• End by summarizing your key message.

You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room. You just need to be the one people remember.

Small communication habits like these can have a huge impact on your confidence, influence, and executive presence.

Have you tried this before? 👇

1. I stopped trying to sound impressive.
→ I focused on communicating one idea clearly instead of trying to sound intelligent. People remember clarity, not big words.

2. I accepted that nervousness is normal.
→ Every good speaker still feels adrenaline. The goal isn’t to eliminate nerves. It’s to perform despite them.

3. I spoke whenever I had the chance.
→ Every classroom, meeting, and competition became practice. Confidence is built through repetition, not reading.

4. I prepared more than everyone else.
→ Confidence isn’t magic. It comes from knowing your material so well that your brain has room to focus on delivery.

5. I stopped fearing judgment.
→ Most people aren’t waiting for you to fail. They’re too busy thinking about themselves.

6. I learned to enjoy being uncomfortable.
→ Every speech that scared me became proof that I was growing. The discomfort eventually became exciting instead of terrifying.

7. I focused on helping the audience.
→ The moment I stopped making it about me and started asking, “How can I help them?” public speaking became much easier.

📌 Save this for the next time you have to speak.

Stop telling people that “hard work speaks for itself.” It doesn’t.

It never has…..

The people who get promoted, funded, invited to speak, or trusted with larger opportunities aren’t always the smartest people in the room.

They’re often the ones who know how to communicate their value.

I’ve met brilliant founders who couldn’t convince investors.

Exceptional MSME owners whose products deserved global marketsbut their pitches never reflected their capability.
Talented professionals who kept waiting for their work to be “noticed.”

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Silence is expensive.

If you cannot articulate your ideas with clarity, confidence, and conviction, someone less capable but more visible will often get the opportunity.

Public speaking is no longer just a presentation skill.

🎯It is a leadership skill.
🎯A business growth skill.
🎯A sales skill.
🎯A fundraising skill.
🎯A career acceleration skill.

Whether you’re:

• Leading a manufacturing business
• Building a startup
• Managing teams
• Pitching to investors
• Negotiating with clients
• Representing your company

Your ability to communicate determines how people perceive your capability.

Competence earns respect. Communication earns opportunities.

The professionals and business leaders who will thrive over the next decade won’t just be experts.

They’ll be experts who can influence.

What do you think matters more in today’s world? being exceptionally good at your work, or being able to communicate that value effectively?

🚨 Unpopular Opinion: Confidence doesn’t come before public speaking. Public speaking creates confidence.

Read that again.

Stop waiting to feel ready.

No hack.
No shortcut.
No “confidence trick.”

The only way to become a confident speaker is to speak.

The biggest mistake people make?

They focus on themselves.

“What if I mess up?”
“What if people judge me?”
“What if I forget my words?”

Instead, ask yourself:

“How can I help the people listening?”

That one shift changes everything.

✨ Leading a meeting? Focus on clarity, not perfection.

✨ Pitching your business? Focus on solving problems, not sounding impressive.

✨ Creating content? Your audience wants authenticity more than perfection.

✨ Speaking on stage? Remember, people came to learn from you not judge you.

Your audience won’t remember every word.

They’ll remember how you made them feel.

Confidence grows when your purpose becomes bigger than your fear.

Stop chasing perfection.

Start creating impact.

👇 What’s your biggest public speaking challenge?
Presentations, networking, client meetings, social media videos, or speaking on.

Save this post for the days when self-doubt wins.

Have you ever walked out of an important meeting and replayed every single sentence in your head?

“I should’ve said that.”
“Why did I freeze?”
“Why couldn’t I explain my business properly?”

I’ve met hundreds of MSME owners and startup founders who believe their biggest challenge is sales.

It’s not.

Their biggest challenge is communication.

A brilliant founder walked into a client meeting with an incredible product.

But the moment the client asked,
“So… why should we choose you?”

His mind went blank.

He knew the answer.
He had lived the answer.

But he couldn’t say it.

The client chose someone else.

Not because they had a better product.
Not because they were cheaper.

They simply communicated better.

And this happens every single day.

Founders lose investors.
Business owners lose clients.
Entrepreneurs lose opportunities.

Not because they’re incapable…
But because pressure changes the way we think.

When your mind is busy worrying,
“What if I sound stupid?”
“What if they ask something I don’t know?”
“What if I mess this up?”

Your brain stops focusing on your message.

It starts focusing on your fear.

The good news?

Communication isn’t a talent. It’s a skill.

It’s something you can learn, practise, and master.

That’s exactly why I’m hosting the Mastering Business Communication Workshop on 30th August 2026 in Mumbai.

In one day, you’ll learn how to:
✔ Speak with clarity even under pressure
✔ Pitch your business confidently
✔ Handle difficult conversations without losing your calm
✔ Influence clients, investors and teams
✔ Build executive presence that people remember

Because the next opportunity shouldn’t go to the person with the loudest voice.

It should go to the person with the clearest message.

And that can be you.

The VP just proposed a strategy that you know, with absolute certainty, is going to fail. What do you do?

Most ambitious women in corporate fall into a trap. They think they only have two choices:

1. Stay quiet, let the project fail, and protect the relationship.
2. Speak up, start a war over the data, and protect the outcome.

Both of these choices are dangerous for your career.

If you stay quiet, you become complicit in the failure and are seen as having no strategic vision.

If you fight it head-on, you become a liability and are seen as someone who can’t be trusted in a room with senior leadership.

Neither gets you promoted.

The most respected leaders don’t fight their executives and they don’t blindly obey them. They guide them.

Instead of being a brick wall that says “no,” become a navigator.

Align with their goal first, then introduce the obstacle as a shared problem to solve.

Here’s exactly what to say:

Instead of:

“We can’t launch by Q3, the engineering team doesn’t have the bandwidth.”

Say:

“I agree that launching by Q3 is the right strategic move to capture the market.

To hit that Q3 target, we have a bandwidth bottleneck in engineering. How would you like us to prioritize the current roadmap to free up those resources?”

You aren’t saying no.

You are asking them to help you achieve their own goal.

You have moved from being an obstacle to becoming a partner in a single sentence.

The principle:

Great leaders don’t win arguments, they create alignment. When people feel you’re working toward the same objective, they become far more open to discussing risks, constraints, and solutions.
