WINNER INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION We are awarding a film that has moved us deeply in our hearts. Using movement for its storytelling, this delicate, harrowing, and visually striking work offers a powerful exploration of mental health, revealing both its fragility and resilience with a remarkable strength. And the winner of the International Competition 2026 is: The Death of The Fish by Eva Lusbaronian. — Nihan Sivridag, Thomas Hakim, and Mees Peijnenburg. —— Leiden Shorts ‘26 May 29 → June 02 by @leidenshorts
WINNER BRAND NEW EYES COMPETITION The winning film blew the jury away, evoking a powerful emotional response. It immerses us in a chromatically rich and bizarre world where everything feels slightly off. The animation style draws our attention to these subtle distortions, creating an atmosphere of unease and intrigue. At the heart of this eerie story lies a universal obsession: the search for meaning and our place in the world. An instantly rewatchable short, concise yet richly layered, with an ambiguous ending that leaves you wanting more. The winner of the Brand New Eyes Competition is: God is Shy by Jocelyn Charles. — Arwa Aburawa, Andreea Cristina Borțun, and Thomas Streekstra. —— Leiden Shorts ‘26 May 29 → June 02 by @leidenshorts
WINNER NATIONAL COMPETITION This is a very current issue which has often been overlooked, however has been treated imaginatively and courageously by the filmmaker with the ability to connect the personal and political. We’re very much looking forward and excited to see what they will make in the future. The National Competition goes to: How To Catch A Butterfly by Kiriko Mechanicus. — Darunee Terdtoontaveedej, Turab Shah, and Santiago Martín. —— Leiden Shorts ‘26 May 29 → June 02 by @leidenshorts
We are delighted to welcome Nina den Hollander as the new Business Director of Leiden Shorts. Working alongside Artistic Director Stavros Markoulakis, Nina will help shape the festival’s continued development, supporting its vision and strengthening its future. For many of you, Nina will already be a familiar face. As our former Festival Coordinator, she knows Leiden Shorts inside and out and has been an integral part of our journey. Alongside this, she brings valuable experience from her role as Business Director at Camera Japan. We couldn’t imagine a more natural person to step into this new chapter with us. Together with Nina, we are already looking ahead to 2027. There is a lot we are excited to share with you soon, including our new theme, festival dates and the first plans for the year ahead. We’re excited for this new chapter, and can’t wait for the 19th edition of the festival to take shape! With love, Leiden Shorts __ Leiden Shorts Summer 2027 by @leidenshorts

In ‘The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing’, Theo Panagopoulos, a Palestinian filmmaker based in Scotland, unearths a rarely-seen Scottish film archive of Palestinian wild flowers and decides to reclaim the footage. 2027 Call for Entries In times of constant change, short films remind us that another perspective is always possible. They challenge dominant narratives, celebrate singular voices, and make room for stories that refuse to fit neatly into the world as we know it. Bold, urgent, playful, and uncompromising, they continue to redefine what cinema can be. For the 19th edition of Leiden Shorts, we’re once again opening our doors to filmmakers from around the world whose work challenges, moves, delights, and lingers long after the credits roll. We’re looking for films that take creative risks, embrace original voices, and remind us why cinema remains one of the most powerful ways to connect. Have you made a short film in the past year that matches that vision? Fiction. Documentary. Experimental. Animation. Or anything else. No matter the form, if your short film was completed after 1 January 2026, runs 30 minutes or less, and dares to captivate, we want to see it light up the screen in Leiden in our global celebration of cinema. → SUBMISSION DEADLINES & FEES Early Bird: October 5, 2026 Regular: December 7, 2026 Last Chance: January 11, 2027 🔗 Please visit our website for detailed information regarding competitions, awards, fees, and guidelines. ___ Leiden Shorts Spring 2027 by @leidenshorts

New text! 🗺️ Rewriting official histories, Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah investigate the mutation of geographies in both their short films and their London-based film exhibition project OTHER CINEMAS. The filmmaking duo was the artist in focus at last month’s Leiden Shorts, where this interview conducted by Alonso Aguilar took place.
