ON VIEW: Works by TESS MILLER Sunshine Coast–based ceramicist Tess Miller investigates the relationship between the embodied practice of working with clay and the organic forms that emerge through making. Transformation sits at the heart of Miller’s practice. Through the physical acts of moulding, pressing and building, she creates broods or families of biomorphic forms that are ultimately transformed through the alchemy of fire. The resulting works feel both ancient and newly formed: tactile monuments that echo the rhythms, textures and irregularities of the natural world. Working intuitively, Miller uses her hands as both tools and guides, responding to the material and listening to where the clay wants to go. Her forms explore the interplay between positive and negative space, solidity and openness, movement and stillness. Interested in translating gesture and movement into shape, Miller works with natural pigments and richly tactile clay bodies to create abstract forms that possess their own presence. Grounded yet open, familiar yet ambiguous, her works celebrate the physicality of clay and its capacity for continual transformation. Works are on view in the Noosaville gallery or via the gallery website. Direct enquiries to the gallery team via gallery@leightoncontemporary.com or DM. ON VIEW: New Works by CRISTINA METELLI Born in Milan, Italy, Cristina Metelli studied at art school as a teenager, before immigrating to Adelaide, South Australia, where she continued her artistic education, earning a Bachelor Degree in Visual Art (Honours) from Adelaide Central School of Art. Metelli’s practice centres on making abstract paintings inspired by the natural landscape, investigating the extent to which human lives are entwined with the natural environment. “I spend as much time as possible walking in nature, connecting to the land and everything in it. While walking helps my body, nature soothes my mind, and keeps me in the present moment. The feeling of being embraced by nature is nurturing and invigorating — it helps me feel connected to the world. When in the studio, through an intuitive process, I begin depicting feelings experienced in the natural landscape through the material qualities of paint. Gestural paint applications and colour relationship are used to express my emotional response through sensations of tension and release.” - Cristina Metelli View works in the Noosaville gallery or via the gallery website - we would be delighted to assist. ON VIEW: Ceramics by NIOKA CLAY Kerri of Nioka Clay is an emerging ceramic artist from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. Kerri’s journey with ceramics began in 2019 while undertaking a Visual Arts Diploma. After completing her diploma, she continued to explore ceramics through self-guided hand-building techniques, uncovering her unique artistic voice. Recognised for her distinctive style in mixing clays, Kerri's work has been exhibited and collected within Australia and internationally. “Intuitively built by hand, my work is an outward expression of memory and story. As a restorative personal practice, I hand-roll coils of clay, using minimal tools, to create forms. Carefully balanced design considers the contrast between elegant symmetry and the organic nature of clay, drawing attention to texture and pattern reflective of the natural world.” - Kerri  Pictured: ‘Orb Vase' (2026) — Clay — 16 cm x 20 cm View works in the Noosaville gallery or via the gallery website - we would be delighted to assist. ON VIEW: New Works by EMILY EBBS Emily Ebbs is an artist living and working on Gadigal Land. This collection of seven new works extends Ebbs’ ongoing investigation into the relationship between painting and the natural environment. Organic materials gathered from the environment surrounding her studio, including eucalyptus leaves, charcoal from burnt trees, and flowers, are incorporated directly into the works. Foraging functions as an important extension of Ebbs’ studio practice, initiating a process of material encounter before the act of painting begins. These collected elements carry the physical traces of the landscape into the studio, where they are transformed through processes of layering and staining. Working between the organic and the painterly, Ebbs combines these natural materials with traditional painting media to produce fluid washes of colour and shifting, atmospheric surfaces. Now On View Online and in the Noosaville gallery: Works by LOUISE FENELEY Based in Adelaide’s sea-side suburb of Marino, Louise Feneley draws her inspiration from the sea and the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. “Who has not collected a shell, a feather, a twig bent just so, an intriguing natural form? From my collection of curiosities of nature these very small treasures are given a new life in a painting, a resurrected life you could say, simply because they are loved enough for me to do so.” - Louise Feneley Pictured: ‘Call Of The Sea II (2024) — Oil on Belgian Linen — 61 cm x 51 cm Direct enquiries to the gallery team via gallery@leightoncontemporary.com #LeightonContemporary #LouiseFeneley #AustralianArt #AustralianArtGallery by @leightoncontemporary
ON VIEW: Works by KRISTIAN FLINDT HAWKER Kristian Flindt Hawker works from an old houseboat on a quiet stretch of the Noosa River, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Using the houseboat rooftop as his studio, his abstract works directly engage with the elements to form abstract landscapes and seascapes. Hawker’s paintings are inspired by aerial views of rugged Australian terrain. He works with a potent alchemy of acrylic, oil and saltwater. This combination, along with natural forces — sunlight, rain, and wind — interacts with the materials over the course of months. Each work is a slow and poetic collaboration with nature; these elements are not only subjects, but also active participants in his process. Hawker’s past work as a potter and filmmaker further inform his works: “each work is a reflection of place, memory, and the continuous evolution of the place that we all call home.” We would be delighted to welcome you to the gallery to further discuss Hawker's practice. ON VIEW: New Works from ‘SALT’ by MICHELLE WITTERS New Zealand-based artist Michelle Witters creates contemporary abstract paintings that capture the emotive power of colour, light and mood. Working directly onto raw natural canvas, she allows the paint to soak into the fibres, where soft, fluid transitions emerge naturally. “Inspired by the quiet shelter of protected coastal waters, ‘Safe Harbour’, as part of my 'SALT' collection of works, evokes a sense of calm, belonging and the gentle comfort of coming home.” - Michelle Witters Pictured: ‘Safe Harbour’ (2026) — Acrylic on Raw Canvas — 120 cm x 90 cm — Framed in White Oak View online or in the gallery. ON VIEW: Works by ADAM HALLS Texture plays a defining role in Adam Halls’ work. “My use of texture has always been a big part of the work,” Halls explains. “My surfaces are built up of layers of fabric and machine stitch.” Through changes in pattern, thread colour, directional mark-making, and the accumulation of stitch, he constructs dense and tactile surfaces that explore depth and spatial movement. “I put a lot of work into building up the texture by changing the pattern, colour of thread and directional mark, and by layering stitching to play with depth and space, whilst trying to capture the vibrancy and beauty of what I’ve seen.” These stitched fields blur the boundaries between drawing, painting, and textile construction. Each thread becomes a visible record of time, patience, and repetition, standing in contrast to the speed and disposability of contemporary digital culture. His works act as subtle counterpoints to mass production, celebrating imperfection and individuality. ON VIEW: Works by DIANA MILLER This series of small-scale works on board, titled ‘All Smalls’, extends Miller’s ongoing exploration of colour and shape-making. Many of these ideas began in a sketchbook that she recently committed to filling with coloured pencil and paint. Its intimacy and immediacy allow for an unrestrained approach to making: one guided by curiosity, spontaneity and a sense of play. Within each work, Miller explores the processes of abstraction through assembling, layering, and an assured understanding of arrangement and balance. Forms shift, intersect and respond to one another, creating compositions that feel both considered and instinctive. ‘All Smalls’ celebrates this ongoing process of discovery, where experimentation remains visible and the possibilities of shape, balance and colour continually evolve. ON VIEW: New Works by ANNALISA LAWRENCE Annalisa Lawrence, widely recognised as ‘Saltwater Woman’, employs an intuitive approach to her practice, drawing inspiration from her extensive travels, coastal lifestyle, and personal encounters. Within her works, Lawrence chronicles her experiences as a mother, surfer, and traveler, each work hinting at the shared threads of the human condition. Lawrence’s evocative mixed media works, often featuring female surfers and figures by the sea, are marked by her distinctive approach to a figurative style which focuses on the nuanced movements of the human form. She is interested in capturing subtle energy between figures, as well as energy within each figure, exploring themes of harmony with nature and interpersonal connections. Delighted to welcome Lily Nicholson to Leighton Contemporary! Lily Nicholson is an Australian artist based on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, where she lives and works on a seaside farm in the locality of Tanja. Nicholson graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Printmaking) from Southern Cross University in 2013. Her multidisciplinary practice explores the relationship between landscape and the quiet rhythms of everyday life, drawing together observations of seasonal change with the cyclical rituals of home and motherhood. Returning to the same places throughout the year, she observes how shifts in colour, light and atmosphere are echoed through the recurring patterns of family life, allowing each to shape and inform the other. Working across gouache and watercolour on paper, and more recently creating large-scale textile works that combine digital print with hand-sewn mark making, she creates abstract compositions shaped by colour, gesture and atmosphere. Nicholson’s imagery emerges from these repeated observations of place, reflecting the annual rhythms of the landscape alongside the familiar routines that mark the passing of time. Through simplified forms and layered surfaces, her work evokes a sense of place, seasonality and emotional resonance.
