A lot of business owners assume they own and control their website because they paid for it. But do you know: who owns the website platform account, where your domain is registered, who has access to your business email, and which other accounts are connected to your site? Those details matter more than most people realize. This Website Ownership Checklist breaks down the key things every business owner should know about their website and digital assets — in simple terms. Save this post so you can come back to the checklist later, especially if you’re planning a redesign, changing providers, or just want to make sure your business is actually in control of its own digital presence. #WebsiteOwnership #SmallBusinessTips #WebsiteStrategy #BusinessBranding #DigitalAssets by @lemessyco

For a law firm, the website needs to establish credibility quickly, communicate expertise clearly and make it easy for a potential client to take the next step. This concept for Harrison Law Group was designed around exactly that — a strong, sophisticated visual presence with clear messaging and an intentional path to consultation. Good web design isn't just about what looks good. It's about making the business easier to understand, trust and choose. Lemessy Co. Web & Design Inc. You know that feeling when you keep changing your website because something just feels… off? You change the font. Move the image. Change the colour. Move the image back. 😂 And somehow, you're still not happy with it. Sometimes the problem isn't that you haven't tried enough things. It's that the website needs a clearer direction — from the layout and visual hierarchy to the messaging and overall user experience. DIY can be a great place to start. But your website shouldn't become that project you’re constantly trying to finish. Sometimes you've fiddled with it long enough. 😅 #WebDesign #WebsiteDesign #SmallBusinessWebsite #DIYWebsite #WebsiteStrategy by @lemessyco
People looking for counselling are often already feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or unsure about reaching out. The last thing their first impression needs to feel like is a hospital waiting room. A counselling website can still look professional without feeling overly clinical. For this psychotherapy website concept, the goal was to create something warm, calm and reassuring — while still making the important information easy to find. Soft colours, welcoming imagery, clear service sections and simple calls to action help create an experience that feels more human and less intimidating. Because when someone is considering counselling, the website isn’t just there to explain the service. It’s often the first step in helping them feel comfortable enough to reach out. Website concept: Jean Keating, Registered Psychotherapist Lemessy Co creates strategic websites for service-based businesses that need to build trust before the first conversation even happens. #TherapistWebsite #WebsiteDesign #CounsellingPractice #ServiceBasedBusiness #LemessyCo by @lemessyco
Your brand doesn’t need to be the loudest in the room to make an impression. It needs to be clear. Consistent. Intentional. The right colours, the right words, the right experience — working together in a way that feels unmistakably you. Because memorable brands aren’t always the ones shouting for attention. Sometimes, they’re simply the ones you remember. #BrandStrategy #BrandDesign #SmallBusinessBranding #ServiceBasedBusiness #WebDesign by @lemessyco
A lot of what I do happens before I ever open a design file. Thinking. Researching. Asking questions. Working through what the business actually needs — and sometimes changing direction completely. The pretty part comes later. 😊 Good design starts with understanding what we’re trying to accomplish in the first place. #smallbusinessowner, #solopreneurjourney, #femalefounder, #websiterefresh #brandingforbusiness by @lemessyco
DIYing your website can start out feeling simple. Change a few colours. Update the fonts. Move a section around. Then suddenly you're three hours in, the mobile version looks completely different, and you're afraid to touch anything else. 😂 Platforms like WordPress, Wix and Squarespace have made it easier than ever to build your own website — but easier doesn't always mean easy. Good website design also involves understanding layout, responsive design, user experience, hierarchy and all the little technical decisions happening behind the scenes. Sometimes you can DIY it. And sometimes you've fiddled with it long enough. 😅 #WebDesign #WebsiteDesign #SmallBusinessWebsite #DIYWebsite #LemessyCo by @lemessyco
Your website has about five seconds to answer one very important question: “Am I in the right place?” When someone lands on your homepage, they shouldn’t have to scroll through multiple sections to figure out what your business actually does. A strong homepage should quickly communicate: • Who you help • What you offer • Why it matters • What makes your business credible • What you want them to do next And this is where website strategy matters. Sometimes the problem isn’t that a website needs more content, more graphics or more features. Sometimes it simply needs better hierarchy, clearer messaging and a more intentional path for the visitor. Good design gets attention. Good strategy helps people know what to do with it. Try the 5-second test on your own website: open your homepage and look at only the first screen. Without scrolling, is it immediately clear what your business does? #WebsiteStrategy #WebDesign #WebsiteDesign #SmallBusinessWebsite #BrandStrategy by @lemessyco
A website can be functional and still quietly work against your business. For counsellors and therapists, design isn’t only about aesthetics — it affects how a potential client experiences your practice before they ever speak to you. Someone visiting a counselling website may already feel overwhelmed, uncertain or nervous about reaching out. Small website decisions can either reduce that friction or add to it. A strong counselling website should: Create calm — thoughtful spacing, typography and colour make information easier to process. Make the next step obvious — visitors shouldn’t have to search for how to get started. Use clear, human language — speak to what the client is experiencing, not just list credentials and services. Build trust — consistent branding, professional presentation and authentic imagery all contribute to credibility. Prioritize information — not everything needs to compete for attention on the homepage. Guide rather than overwhelm — good design creates a natural path from “Can you help me?” to “Here’s what I can do next.” For a counselling practice, a website isn’t simply an online brochure. It’s often the first part of the client experience. #CounsellorWebsite #TherapistWebsite #WebDesign #WebsiteStrategy #CounsellingPractice LemessyCo by @lemessyco
Your business has grown. Has your website grown with it? If your website no longer reflects the quality of your work, the clients you want to attract, or where your business is headed, it may be time for a refresh. Ready to talk about your website? When did running a Canadian business start meaning you had to become a content creator too? Somewhere along the way, the expectations changed. Business owners aren't just expected to run their businesses anymore. They're supposed to film Reels, understand algorithms, follow trends, write posts, take photos, edit videos, build a personal brand, respond to comments and somehow keep feeding the content machine. All while actually serving their customers and running the business. And I think it's worth asking: does every business really need to do all of that? I'm not suggesting that social media isn't valuable. It absolutely can be. But a law firm, construction company, therapist, restaurant and online retailer don't have the same customers — so why would they all need the same digital strategy? For some Canadian businesses, a strong website, a well-managed Google presence and good reviews may do far more for the business than posting a Reel every day. For others, social media may be exactly where their customers discover them and make purchasing decisions. The strategy should depend on the business, the customer and how that customer actually makes a decision. Sometimes I think we've become so focused on keeping up with platforms that we've stopped asking a much simpler question: Are we building marketing strategies around how our customers actually choose businesses — or around what social media platforms have convinced us we should be doing? I'd genuinely like to hear what other business owners and marketers think. Has creating content become an unavoidable part of running a business today, or have we taken it too far? #SmallBusinessCanada #MarketingStrategy #DigitalMarketing #BusinessStrategy #womeninbusiness by @lemessyco
