Just a few more days. Each one melting into early dusk, before the long darkness of the polar night settles in. Until then, I keep turning my gaze to the sky, the mountains, and the sea, and so often I think: this is one of Elizabeth’s photos. Today felt like the perfect moment for a special edition.

There will be chocolate fossils, yes – but today was all about the tundra, that fragile yet fertile layer between frozen soil and the dry air. 🌱
I love the way the valleys’ colours have changed over the past few weeks: from a glowing green, through every shade of orange, red and brown, to the greys of the first frost. I imagine the taste as dusty, with the occasional sharp edge, and just sweet enough. And because the polar night will also bring with it a sense of cosiness and the holidays, there’s a little flavour of cinnamon and cardamom too.

Die international erfolgreiche und preisgekrönte Bildhauerin und Konzeptkünstlerin Lena von Goedeke (*1983 in Duisburg, lebt in Berlin und Longyearbyen, Spitzbergen) ist von Mai bis Oktober 2024 als Artist in Residence am Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden zu Gast. Die Ausstellung GROUND TRUTH mit rund 15 Werken und Serien der Künstlerin, die in den vergangenen vier Jahren entstanden sind, vermittelt einen Einblick in ihre kollaborative Forschung. Im Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden hat sich Lena von Goedeke intensiv mit der Fragilität und Flüchtigkeit von materialisierten Datenspeichern wie Gestein, Fossilien und Permafrost beschäftigt.

„Die 2023/24 entstandene Werkgruppe ,Trümmer’ steht im Fokus ihrer Präsentation. Die flüchtigen Permafrostobjekte, hergestellt vor Ort und – bis zu ihrer Offenlegung – konserviert bei Minus 25 Grad, binden einen performativen Prozess in die Ausstellung ein. Die an Äste erinnernden Objekte bestehen aus gefrorenem Erdboden – Permafrost. Kurz nach der Entnahme aus dem Tiefkühlschrank sind sie am detailreichsten, man glaubt, die Rinde, Jahresringe, Splitter und Maserung des Geästs erkennen zu können. Die zunächst sichtbaren Details zerfallen mit Verschwinden des Reifs und der Erwärmung bis schließlich der Permafrost zu Matsch verflossen ist. Über Stunden hinweg wird ein Kreislauf sichtbar, den die Künstlerin von unserem Handeln auf der Erde ableitet: verbrennen wir doch die fossilen Stoffe Öl und Kohle, die ursprünglich aus Flora entstanden sind – und sorgen damit für das Tauen des Permafrostes der borealen Lebensräume. Diese sind auch ein Sinnbild für die Fragilität und Instabilität unseres Planeten, Lebensräume wie Spitzbergen, die von der Klimakatastrophe bedroht werden.“

What did it sound like?
During my residency @schaufler_lab_tu_dresden I came across mummified leaves. Near my arctic town, a forest of fossilized leaves and bark is coming to the surface of the Anthropocene, where the glacier has retreated. These leaves were too thin to be conserved as intact specimen, but their imprint and carbonized remnants in the rocks will help me reconstruct their rustle, some 50 million years ago.
But first: collecting.

Wie ephemer sind Daten?

Seit Mai 2024 forscht die Bildhauerin und Konzeptkünstlerin Lena von Goedeke im Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden zu den Dimensionen von Daten-Welten im Kontext der fortschreitenden Transformation der Arktis. Ihre Ausstellung GROUND TRUTH in der Galerie der Kustodie im Görges-Bau gibt einen ersten Einblick in die Themen und Fragestellungen, welche die Künstlerin während ihrer Residency an der Technischen Universität Dresden beschäftigt haben. Im Mittelpunkt ihrer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Arktis steht die prozesshafte Untersuchung materialisierter Datenspeicher sowie deren Fragilität und Flüchtigkeit.
Unser Bild des hochkomplexen arktischen Lebensraums ist vor allem geprägt von einem digitalen, positiv wie negativ gefärbten Blick: Drohnen- und Sensoraufnahmen, mikroskopische Visualisierungen usw. führen beinahe zwangsläufig zu einer simplifizierenden Engführung, die ebenso für die stilisierten visuellen Entsprechungen gilt. In ihren poetischen und zugleich analytischen Skulpturen, Installationen sowie filmischen und fotografischen Arbeiten rückt Lena von Goedeke diese Diskrepanz in den Fokus, wenn sie die physische, materielle und haptische Dimension und Bildgewalt des Nordpolargebiets anschaulich und vor allem unmittelbar körperlich erfahrbar macht.
Für die Ausstellung hat die Künstlerin insbesondere mit Expert:innen aus der Fachrichtung Geowissenschaften zusammengearbeitet und sich mit Lehr- und Forschungsobjekten aus den Geologischen Sammlungen der Universität sowie der Sektion Paläobotanik im Museum für Mineralogie und Geologie der Senckenberg Naturhistorischen Sammlungen Dresden auseinandergesetzt.

During the dark time of the year, the three months of complete night known as the Dark Season in my town in the Arctic, alongside the firmament and all its phenomena (the Aurora, Airglow, Sounding Rockets), one thing has become particularly conspicuous in recent years: the increasingly dense network of satellites cutting through the sky. In addition to the Cryosat satellites and other Earth orbiters of the Copernicus program of the EU, about 7000 more satellites are clearly visible here, orbiting the poles, approximately 800 passing overhead per day. This is the reason why the most important radar station in the northern hemisphere is located here on the 78th parallel. Here their data is downloaded.
These satellites look down at us, measure, record, reflect.
The more there are, the denser becomes the artificial network of sensors that blocks our view of the outside world.
In long-exposure photographs, I capture these satellites on their journey. This network is the artificial sphere enveloping our planet, and eventually filled with material and debris, it will make passage into space a risky endeavor. Already, the view outward is disrupted. What happens to our planetary understanding when individuals can no longer locate
themselves in the universe through a starry sky?

Two years ago, I deposited a kind of data storage device - a glass drill core containing material witness of my existence - in the glacier behind the northernmost town on Earth.
An absurd, cynical action. In the search for eternal storage sites for the exploding size of data we generate, we are destroying the places that contain the planetary knowledge we will need to survive.
The deposit turned into a procession. It has long been clear that this ice is anything but eternal.
This glacier has melted even more than I had expected, my glass sculpture now melted out, somewhere in the ruins.
