I’m excited to officially introduce Leona No. 04, the “Composer”, a steel-string acoustic guitar. It’s a 14-fret 000-body guitar, a project I’ve been working on for quite some time, with a lot of attention going into its design, wood selection, and construction. I wanted to combine traditional elements, such as the pyramid bridge and diamond volute (more commonly found on guitars from the early 20th century), with unconventional tonewoods and some of my own design details, such as the rosette and hand-cut mother-of-pearl fret markers. Here are the specifications: * Body: 000, 14-fret * Top: Bearclaw Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmannii) * Sides: Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) * Back: Three-piece Purpleheart and Katalox (Swartzia cubensis) * Binding: Flamed Maple (Acer rubrum) * Rosette: Mother of Pearl and Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) * Neck: Five-piece Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), Katalox, and Flamed Maple * Fingerboard: Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) * Fingerboard Inlays: Hand-cut Mother of Pearl * Bridge: Ebony, pyramid style * Nut & Saddle: Bone * Headstock: Purpleheart * Headstock Inlay: Serpentine * Tuners: Gotoh 15:1, nickel * Scale Length: 25 21/32” * Fingerboard Radius: 12” * Finish: High-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer Price: 2,999 USD + shipping (hardcase included). Handcrafted in Mexico. Worldwide shipping available. #luthier #handmadeguitar #boutiqueguitars by @leonaguitars
Leona no. 3 This is the newest classical guitar I’ve created. My intention was to build a high-quality instrument with an identity of its own, without losing the traditional character of the classical guitar. I allowed myself more freedom in a few areas, developing my own headstock and bridge designs while keeping the instrument unmistakably classical. The original rosette design combines abalone, cocobolo, and colored wood purfling. The headstock brings together flamed maple and cocobolo and features the gemstone inlay that has become part of Leona’s visual identity, in this case made from ruby zoisite. The guitar features a lattice-braced Bearclaw Sitka spruce top and an unbraced composite back made from cocobolo, spruce, and cocobolo. Specifications: Top: Bearclaw Sitka Spruce Top Bracing: Lattice Back & Sides: Cocobolo Back Construction: Cocobolo / Spruce / Cocobolo Composite Back Bracing: None Binding: Flamed Maple Rosette: Abalone, Cocobolo & Colored Wood Purfling Neck: Mahogany Neck Reinforcements: Katalox Neck Center Strip: Flamed Maple Fingerboard: Ebony Bridge: Brazilian Rosewood Nut & Saddle: Bone Headstock: Flamed Maple & Cocobolo Headstock Inlay: Ruby Zoisite Tuners: 18:1 Ball-Bearing Tuners Scale Length: 650 mm Frets: 19 + Partial 20th Fret Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer Handcrafted in Puebla, Mexico. #ClassicalGuitar #Luthier #guitarmaking #handmadeguitar by @leonaguitars
I realized I’ve shared quite a bit about the guitars I build, but not much about myself or how I got into building them. So, for anyone curious about the person behind Leona, here’s the bio from my website: "Born in 1996 in Zacatecas, Mexico, Oscar developed a fascination with guitars from an early age. Long before building his first instrument. The evidence can still be found in old school notebooks, where sketches of guitars often competed for space with the actual notes. That fascination eventually developed into a serious interest, he began studying with different luthiers in Puebla and Mexico City while also learning independently through books, research and, above all, building. What began as an interest gradually became a full-time pursuit and ultimately led to the creation of Leona Guitars. His approach to building doesn't belong entirely to one school. It combines techniques inherited from the Mexican guitar-making tradition with contemporary tools, methods and ideas, choosing what makes the most sense for each instrument rather than following convention for its own sake. Today, Oscar builds each Leona individually, with particular attention to sound, materials, construction and design. " by @leonaguitars
Processing all my own wood means I’m independent of wood suppliers. I can get the best possible cuts from each plank for better sound in my guitars, and offer my clients materials the big brands would never 💁‍♂️ #luthier #guitarbuilding #handmadeguitar #woodworkshop by @leonaguitars
This is the headstock designs I came up for for my guitars! I decided to always put a precious stone on the headstock, thats kinda my thing you know? But I will be honest with you, that started as a turnaround on not having a CNC machine able to cut Mother of Pearl logos with precision. I still have tu cut and put it in by hand. But way easier to do a “drop” shape thing than the words “Leona”. I really liked the result and I think is very original. Plus I have a huge variety of stones to use. I decided to keep this as my design feature. #luthier #acousticguitars by @leonaguitars
After a long time building this guitar I finally got to string it up and hear it for the first time. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different woods, bracing designs, and construction details, and I’m genuinely surprised by how it turned out. I decided to compare it with my personal Martin 000-15M, an American-made guitar I’ve owned and loved for over 12 years. The difference honestly caught me off guard. Both guitars were recorded with the same setup, without EQ or audio processing. I’m curious to hear what you think. Which one sounds better to you? #luthier #guitarbuilding #handmadeguitar #guitarbuilder by @leonaguitars
I’ve chosen each of these woods myself, whether for its sound, stability, or the way it looks. Working in a small workshop gives me the freedom to use materials and combinations you don’t often see on production guitars. Which one is your favorite? #luthier #handmadeguitar #guitarbuilding #luthiers by @leonaguitars
Leona no. 4 is almost here… Our take on the 000 guitar, but with our own appointments. Like a beautiful bearclaw spruce top and stunning purpleheart-katalox back. Paired with deluxe appointment like mother of pearl in the fret markers and rosette. You can’t miss this one! #luthier #handmadeguitar #acousticguitar #000guitar by @leonaguitars

Hi! Since I posted the Leona no. 3 there’s been a lot of interest to hear how it sounds, I did not want to wait until the session player performs with it so here’s a quick overview and soundtest for you! I am really excited for this one, waiting for its lucky owner. Available for sale: 3,449usd plus shipping includes case. #guitarbuilding #classicalguitar #luthier by @leonaguitars
A little sneak peek at the new guitar I just finished. The headstock is an original design and I was trying to do something unique and eye catching that makes people say “that’s a Leona” but without changing too much the tradition of a classical guitar, pictures and sound test coming soon! #luthier #guitarbuilding #guitarbuilder #handmadeguitar by @leonaguitars
One of the first steps of every build: turning two bookmatched pieces of spruce into a soundboard. Entirely by hand, no power tools. There’s something really satisfying about doing it the traditional way. #luthier #guitarbuilding #guitarbuilder #handmadeguitar by @leonaguitars
