Where the Water Remembers

Inspired by Padley Gorge, Peak District

This painting was inspired by one of my walks through the beautiful woodland of Padley Gorge in the Peak District.

As you enter the forest, there is an almost majestic feeling, as though you have stepped into another dimension. Yet, this enchanting place exists within our own world, a hidden natural wonder that I believe everyone should experience at least once.

There is something truly special about this part of Padley Gorge. The beauty of the ancient trees, the changing colours of autumn, and the gentle sound of water flowing over the stones create an atmosphere that feels both magical and deeply calming. It is a place where the soul longs to wander, the senses awaken, and the mind can finally find rest. I could sit beside that stream for hours, simply taking in its peaceful surroundings.

When I captured this moment, I knew I had to paint it. I wanted to preserve not just the beauty of the landscape, but also the feeling of being there. Every stone, every tree, and the intricate details of the woodland became something I wanted to hold onto to capture on canvas so that the memory of this special place would remain with me.

Through this painting, I hope to share a little of the tranquillity I experienced at Padley Gorge. May it bring a sense of peace, warmth and connection to nature to those who welcome it into their homes. by @leonamasonatelier

Autumn Painting, I think I found my style 🥰😍
They said share your art. Strangers on the internet, are kinder than you think. by @leonamasonatelier

This piece holds a deeply personal memory for me. Padley Gorge was the site of the very first circular walk I ever tackled in the Peak District. On that first visit, it felt steep, challenging, and exhausting! But over time, it became my sanctuary and my absolute favourite walk in the entire national park.

Last autumn, I caught Padley Gorge at its absolute peak. Twilight was closing in, dusk was falling, and my phone battery was about to die, but as I approached this iconic bridge, the view took my breath away. I knew instantly it was a moment I had to paint.

The Creative Process
When I brought this memory back to the studio, I wanted to capture more than just a literal photograph, I wanted to evoke the magic of how that moment felt.

Soft Atmospheric Haze: I painted the distant trees with a gentle, misty haze, hinting at the quiet fog rolling through the gorge as evening sets in.

Vivid Colour Contrast: I chose rich, cool bluish tones for the rushing stream to contrast against a warm, vibrant tapestry of fallen autumn leaves.

Bringing this piece to life brought me so much joy, turning a fleeting moment on the trail into a lasting piece of art. by @leonamasonatelier

Hidden Gem at The Peak District🍁

This painting was inspired by a morning walk where I lost my way, only to discover a hidden gem. It was around 7:00 AM and raining softly. As I sat under shelter to eat a quick snack and stay dry, this view unfolded before me, the gentle stream, the rich carpet of autumn leaves, and a truly magical atmosphere. I knew right then that I had to paint it. 🥰🍁🖌

This painting was inspired by one of my autumn walks at Padley Gorge. I came across a beautiful stone staircase covered in fallen leaves, with the sunlight falling just right, not too bright, not too dim, but creating the most beautiful atmosphere.

The autumn foliage was simply breathtaking! I couldn’t resist taking a photo, and I knew right away that it was a moment worth painting.

For me, painting this scene is a way of preserving that memory, capturing the beauty of the place and appreciating every little detail, from the scattered leaves on the stone steps to each individual leaf in the foliage.

A little piece of autumn, for me to treasure. 🍁🎨

Soft light and long, golden coats. 🎨 Coos in oil on canvas.

Last year in Scotland was full of adventure, camping, paddle boarding, and stunning trails, but my first close encounter with Highland cattle truly stole my heart.
I created this small oil painting series to study their rich textures and relive the magic of seeing them up close in their natural element.

Let's Paint these cute highland cows
Oil Painting by @winsorandnewton by @leonamasonatelier

Have you ever seen a Highland cow in person?

This was my second time seeing them, but my very first time up close! During our trip to Scotland, I made it a mission to find a farm so I could see these beautiful, hairy cows in their natural habitat. Seeing them was a must before heading home!

I painted this piece as part of my Summer Travel Series, where I capture the things I love most from my holidays.
