Here’s a breakdown of how this image is edited and what story it visually tells:

Editing Breakdown:

1. Yellow Markings:
• The yellow annotations are not part of the original photo but were added to direct attention to specific story elements.
• Lines & Boxes: Frame the entire composition and direct the viewer’s eye across the room, creating a sense of spatial awaren
• Circles/Arrows: Highlight important visual contrasts and relationships, especially the official portrait and the subject’s present-day relaxed self.

2. Composition & Framing:
• The image is composed with balance: Left Side: Man in motion (life and present), Center: Framed military portrait (identity and past), Right Side: Open doorway (symbolic future/personal space).
• This triangle (man–portrait–doorway) creates narrative tension and harmony.

3. Lighting:
• Soft, ambient lighting helps remove harsh contrast, setting a calm and inviting tone.
• The military portrait, although more dramatic in lighting, creates contrast with the warm, natural light in the rest of the room.

4. Color & Texture:
• Neutral tones dominate (beige, soft browns, cream), exuding calm and comfort.
• The man’s attire blends with the room’s palette, symbolizing peace and integration with his space.
• Texture on chairs and rug brings a homely, regal elegance post-service.

The entire frame captures:
- Legacy and transition
- The contrast between public duty and personal peace
- Hospitality and quiet confidence

This is how I tell stories through visuals not just with what we see, but how we frame it.

A General at Ease – Telling Stories Through Frames

This image tells more than meets the eye.

A retired Nigerian general stands smiling in his home, welcoming a guest. Behind him, a commanding official portrait reminds us of a past defined by duty and discipline. But here, in soft lighting and neutral tones, he represents calm, legacy, and life after service.

From the structured military to the warmth of civilian life, the frame captures:
- Legacy and transition
- The contrast between public duty and personal peace
- Hospitality and quiet confidence

This is how we tell stories through visuals not just with what we see, but how we frame it. The past watches over, but the present is warm and welcoming.

Storytelling is not just about the subject, it’s also about composition, light, tone, and meaning.

Okolede Festival 2025: A Story of Ekpetiama’s Spirit

The sun rose slowly over Ikibiri, casting golden light across the rivers and raffia rooftops of Ekpetiama Clan. Yesterday morning, as the drums began to beat and voices rose in song, a familiar joy spread through the mangrove air, the Okolede Festival had BEGUN.

It wasn’t just a ceremony. It was a homecoming. A reminder. A defiant celebration of identity.

Women chanting and cheering gracefully, their laughter carrying through the air like incense. Elders sat with pride etched into every wrinkle, their eyes misty with memory and hope. Youths danced with urgency, as if to stomp out sorrow and awaken joy buried deep beneath the oil stained soil.

The aroma of native spices and fresh fish wafted from the firesides palm oil sauce simmering, roasted yam crisping, and pots bubbling with love and legacy. People gathered not just to eat, but to remember. To heal. To celebrate their right to exist fully, beautifully, and unapologetically on their own land.

For decades, the Ekpetiama people have endured the silent war of environmental degradation, oil spills, poisoned waters, and forgotten promises. But on days like this, hope rises louder than any flare stack. The festival is their resistance! draped in color, sound, and spirit. It is a love letter to the past and a powerful declaration to the future: We are still here. And we are still dancing.

To witness this moment is to witness a people reawakening.

I am deeply honored to be documenting the Okolede Festival this year capturing the authenticity of Ekpetiama’s heartbeat as it echoes through movement, music, and memory. This is more than content, it is heritage, resilience, and the warm pulse of a people unbroken.

From Ikibiri, with a story.
