Badami has rightfully earned its reputation as a world-class sport climbing destination. It is inspiring to see growing enthusiasm from new visitors, adventurers, and media creators who come to experience its iconic sandstone cliffs and discover the joy of climbing.
However, this rapid popularity is coming at a cost.
As daily footfall frequently exceeds 100 visitors per day, the crag is experiencing significant operational pressure, particularly around popular routes like (MOB). Heavy demand has led to overcrowding, intense price competition among local operators, and severely compromised safety practices. Most critically, we are seeing multiple top-ropes rigged to the same main anchors, tangled lines, and compromised belay practices.
Furthermore, high-risk habits—such as local guides leaving ropes hanging on routes overnight—expose gear to weathering, damage, and wildlife, creating unseen hazards for the next day.
Rock climbing leaves zero room for casual shortcuts. To preserve Badami and protect everyone on the rock, all operating organizations, clubs, and local guides must commit to these non-negotiable safety and ethical standards:
• Rigging & Equipment Integrity: Multiple groups sharing single anchors or tangling lines must stop. Standard rigging protocols must be respected. Ropes must never be left overnight.
• Daily Inspections: Teams must double-check anchors daily for wear and tear, replacing compromised gear immediately before clients or athletes step onto the wall.
• Rigorous Belay Training: Operators must continuously educate their teams and clients on correct, active belay practices to eliminate human error at the base.
• Respecting the Crag's Sanity: Manage crowds professionally so that the crag remains accessible and respectful for regular climbers and independent sports enthusiasts.
• Giving Back to Badami: True stewardship means maintaining the natural beauty of the area. Operators must actively contribute by keeping the crag clean and packing out all trash.
Growth is incredible for the Indian climbing community, but sustainable growth must be safe growth. by @letsplayclimbing
