May 31st is AIR 17’s final open studios, a chance to speak with the residents about their practice, see their processes up close, and have a peek into what they have been exploring during their time at Textile Arts Center.

Come join artist Alessandro Levato @levato_archive in their studio, where they have been working through tactile, visual, and auditory forms exploring the queer trans body.

The artist shares, “The body is in nature. The body goes so far into nature that it is free of gender.”

They describe their work, “The images are only realized through their attachment with their first; the body is only realized through its development over time. The space between the images allows for the phantom body to live. Out of representation, the absence translates my trans body. I am giving an unrealized body an image.”- Alessandro Levato

Introducing Alessandro Levato @levato_archive, an interdisciplinary artist featured in (a)mending, (at)tending — our exhibition in partnership with @transartfest on view through May 23 ✦

Gallery hours: Wed-Sat 1pm-6pm

Their work in the show:

Phantom Boobs > Singular
104” x 98”
my old bras, thread, batting, and fabric
2023

“This quilt makes use of all of my old bras that are no longer of use to me. Some of the more worn bras are stuffed to make space for the phantom boobs to reside. Other sports bras lay flat but their tightness is taken away. I’ve placed this quilt within an Amish farm near where I grew up. There, the quilt meets its full cycle, its ending, its release.”

Alessandro Levato (they/he) is a trans visual interdisciplinary artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Their work continually works to disrupt boundaries through recontextualization. Existing in a queer machine-made body, he uses performative aspects through the mode of production; interweaving the act of oil stick monotypes, pressed [put through a press] and repressed. Levato seeks to disrupt the final image of the piece using methods of de/reconstruction, cutouts, and melding to reach his own variations of simultaneous identities. They have received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2019) and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award (2022). Their work has been shown in group shows at Equity Gallery (2022) and Trotter & Sholer Gallery (July 15 - August 12, 2023). They have attended Mudhouse Residency (2024), and The Penland School of Craft Winter Residency for printmaking (2025). by @textileartscenter
