Thank you to CBC Radio Kamloops for helping me raise awareness on the Service Abolitions coming to TRU amidst the Student Street Rush!

Make sure to go to HOL 190 at 3:45 for the town hall of the century, because we cannot let provost get away with this.

Office Hours on Tuesday from 2-4pm in the TRUSU Building.

Disclaimer: When I am talking about AI I am specifically referring to the types of Language Learning Models and Generative AI that became prevalent after the release of Chat GPT.

Opinions are my own and don’t necessarily reflect those of the students’ union.

We Need Leadership that Shows Up and Stands Up!

Yesterday I spoke to the provost at the Town Hall for the Fate of Faculty of Student Development, and the cognitive dissonance displayed by the fledgling Provost’s answers to TRU’s proposed replacement of Supplemental Learning and the Writing Center with an AI Chat Bot was baffling.

The fact we as students had the opportunity to have this conversation with the Provost is thanks to the Grassroots Leadership of myself, Josh Dawson at Castanet, Jenna from the Writing Center and so many other great voices in our community fighting for this.
That’s what I want to bring to University Affairs.

We need to end the era of appeasement that the last administration subjected us to and start advocating for students and changing our approach to a more proactive one.

Because we need Leaders with the relevant experience to lead the fight on these issues and not those who don’t show up for students until campaign period starts. I am disappointed in the entirety of the current University Affairs Committee for not attending, and it’s a shame to see them waste this unique opportunity to advocate for students.

Vote wisely because our campus is on the line.

Today was a consequential day.
Honestly I am disappointed.

But we have the chance to rebuild, reflect, and change course.

We will have to work twice as hard, be three times more ambitious, and be four times more proactive in our efforts.

If you needed a wake up call, this is it.
I think the @bcndp will come back stronger, and better.
But we need to come together and get it done. by @leviescobar__

I’ve been going a little crazy lately. by @leviescobar__

Despite the shameless attempts of TRU to greenwash this reckless project, our momentum has continued to surge. We are sending a firm message to our greedy University and the City of Kamloops that we will not fall for their normalization of this type of infrastructure.

The so called Environmental “benefits” of additional heating will be redundant after the Geothermal development (that construction near Old Main) that is projected to finish in November.

The Economic “return” to the community is minimal full time employment and a lease that the greedy admin of TRU has no intention of reinvesting into students. In fact they tried to eliminate Supplemental Learning.

All to support Bell Canada, who made the US company Groq the exclusive AI inference provider.

Our demand is clear, Stop AI Datacenter Development in Kamloops.

(Unlike AI, we received affirmative consent from the petitioners to use their quotes)

I was deeply honoured to have the privilege of touring the Kamloops Indian Residential School as well as the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park with @trusuwildlifeclub .

Residential School History is a subject that is deeply important for our country amid the ongoing challenges that indigenous peoples and communities still face.

This tour particularly impactful. As many of you know I am very open about being Catholic and as such it is especially important for me to face this history and contemporary reality when it comes to the church’s role in reconciliation and how Christ would have seen this. There is so much more that must be done.

It was also an important and perpetual reminder that this was the site of a genocide in a community that I have been living in for about 4 years. It’s not distant but something that impacts our surroundings. We often dedicate much of our energy, and rightfully so on Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo, Iran, and the other countries that are suffering.

But we also must not forget about the monsters in our closet, and be courageous in the face of all forms of oppression. Especially those in our own communities.

In that spirit, I look forward to developing a greater relationship and understanding of the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc and learning more.

(I did not get pictures of the interior of the Residential School as it would be disrespectful) by @leviescobar__
