I never took dance as a child. Instead, I lived vicariously through my friends. I still remember one of my friends’ routines in high school- costume, THE Missy Elliott song- ALL OF IT. 😂

I took a dance class in college and absolutely LOVED everything about it. I can still do the tap dance we performed for our final. AND my “costume”. IYKYK. 🤣

But life has had other plans for a while.
When I say the past 5️⃣ years haven’t been easy, that might just be the understatement of the century.

Moving to a new city AND state. Starting over without family or a real community around us. Surgery after surgery. New diagnoses. Chronic illnesses. Showing up for work. Trying to be a good wife, a good mama, a good friend, a good EVERYTHING to EVERYBODY while my own body feels like it’s working against me.

Some days, just getting through the day is an accomplishment. Some days, my health dictates what I can and cannot do. Some days, I have to fight for answers, fight to be heard, and fight to get people to understand that just because I LOOK okay doesn’t mean I FEEL okay.

And honestly? I’m tired of letting all of that decide what I get to experience in this life.

So this year, while signing Mary Haywood up for another season of dance, I noticed something on the studio schedule. ADULT BALLET. 🩰 I talked to the teacher, explained my laundry list of health issues, and she reassured me that I could come and try whenever I was able.

Yesterday, after a WEEK FROM HELL, I woke up and decided that yesterday was THE DAY.

I went to my first-ever ballet class. #LetThem #ChronicIllnessWarrior #BalletAt40 #MomDreams NutcrackerDream LifeIsTooShort StillBecoming by @libbybarneshicks

Nobody sees the full-time job that comes with being chronically ill.

They see me go to work.
They see me smile.
They see me take my kids places.
They see me showing up.

They don’t see the exhaustion it takes to make that happen.

They don’t see the days I have to calculate my energy before I even get out of bed. The medications. The symptoms. The brain fog. The dizziness. The fear of pushing my body too far. The constant question of, “Is this just a bad day… or is something actually wrong?”

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t being sick.

It’s having to convince everyone—including yourself—that you’re still trying your absolute hardest.

Chronic illness doesn’t always look sick.
Sometimes it looks like showing up anyway. 🤍 by @libbybarneshicks

I was raised on Diet Coke ... didn't have my first "real Coca-Cola" until college, I don't think. Diet Coke is always superior.
Especially McDonald's Diet Coke. #dietcokeaddict #fridgecigs #mcdonaldsdietcoke #momlife by @libbybarneshicks
