POSTS STORIES REELS

The freedom to read only matters if there's a library to read in.

Open doors. Full shelves. Librarians who help every reader find what they need. That's what keeps access real across all 37 @sdpubliclibrary branches, and it depends on a community that speaks up for it.

Banned Books Week ends tomorrow. Advocating for our San Diego Public Libraries doesn't.

Friends! Join us this Sat, Oct 31st at 10:30am for short films, Q&A w/ participating filmmakers and a celebration of our latest Workforce Development Initiative graduates. This film showcase will spotlight our emerging filmmakers’ videos about the different communities in San Diego. From vertical short form content for social media, to powerful documentary style testimonials, these videos portray the importance of our small businesses, our artists, activists, students, and the individuals who keep the world turning.
These videos were produced throughout a six week training, as part of the Workforce Development Initiative. The Workforce Development Initiative is a program for young creatives and filmmakers to embark in the professional field in filmmaking and content creation. The program includes a paid internship with the City of San Diego at the San Diego Public Libraries and a paid training facilitated by our Media Arts Center San Diego teaching artists. Funded by Library Foundation SD, City of San Diego, The Prebys Foundation, U.S. Bank, & #TacoBellFoundation. Photos by Dia Soto by @libraryfoundationsd

Where do San Diego City Council candidates stand on the San Diego Public Library? 📚

We invited City Council candidates on the 2026 ballot to answer our questionnaire about Libraries and the communities they serve.

One candidate responded: Nicole Crosby, District 2. Her answers are posted in full, exactly as submitted.

Library Foundation SD does not endorse or oppose any candidate. We share every response we receive so you can hear directly from the people asking for your vote.

🗳️ Election Day is November 3.

POV: your brain at 3pm on a Friday 📚

Inbox? No. Spreadsheets? No no.

A good book, a free library card and a little @libraryshopsd haul? Yes, yes.

Library Foundation SD’s whole job is making more of those yeses possible. Through philanthropy, advocacy and outreach, we support San Diego Public Library so every San Diegan has a place to read, learn and grow.

Every purchase at Library Shop at Central and Library Shop Mission Hills counts too: 100% of proceeds support free @sdpubliclibrary programs across all 37 branches.

So yes, we’ll admit it. We love the emails, the budget hearings and the spreadsheets too, because that’s how the yeses happen. 💙

So what can you say yes to right now? ✍️ Library Shop’s Matchbook Story Contest! Enter your tiny story for $5 by November 15 at the link in our bio. by @libraryfoundationsd

John Green wrote one of the most banned books in America. He says the credit for fighting book bans doesn’t belong to authors.

In an interview ahead of his San Diego visit, he gave that credit to the teachers and librarians who put their jobs on the line for every reader’s freedom to read.
We couldn’t agree more.

Thank you to @johngreenwritesbooks, to our friends at @meetcutebookshop, and to everyone who joined us on October 11 at @theccae to celebrate his first adult novel, “Hollywood, Ending.”

Every day, @sdpubliclibrary’s librarians stand up for the freedom to read. Library Foundation SD stands with them.

📚 Support the librarians doing this work.

— What began as a quirky challenge to craft a short story inside a matchbook has turned into one of San Diego’s most beloved literary events. The San Diego Library is gearing up for its 10th annual Matchbook Story Contest, running from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15. In this Zevely Zone, I read some impressive ‘fine print’. #zevelyzone by @libraryfoundationsd
