@major.thread #2: @heathermariemarlatt (SALEM, The Golden Carriage, P.K)

Heather Marlatt is a Michigan-born multidisciplinary artist who, through her work with her band Salem in the late 00s and early 10s (she was also a member of P.K and The Golden Carriage), helped to pioneer a notorious strain of electronic music which critics and fans at the time referred to as “witch house”.

In this conversation, we explore personal and creative satisfaction, a lifelong affinity with horses and returning to that love, finding creativity in farming and so much more.

Thank you to Heather for being so giving with her time and being so open to having such a broad, personal conversation. It was a pleasure to learn so much more about an artist I’ve admired for over fifteen years now.

The full conversation is online on the major thread* page and if you’ve already subscribed, directly in your inbox.

@jacquesgreene’s life on record*

In a new regular feature on @major.thread, the seminal producer and DJ runs through ten tracks that are interwoven into the fabric of his life alongside a conversation that spans the importance of physical media, dark horse karaoke hits and so much more.

I’m so stoked to have a man whose work has been present at many formative moments in my life and the lives of my friends, and a man whose taste I hugely admire and respect, be the first within this series. He doesn’t disappoint. by @limitedmitch

MAJOR THREAD #1: Johnny Whitney (The Blood Brothers/Evil Island)

This week I’m presenting something really special that I’ve been working on for a while. @major.thread is a new Substack series that delves deep into the identities of people who have contributed something remarkable to culture. Scenes and communities don’t happen in a vacuum; they are a product of the people who contribute to them, each of whom has their own layered and multifaceted story which has run through the life that they’ve led to get them to this point.

I’m opening this monthly series with @johnny.whitney - vocalist for @thebloodbrothers, Jaguar Love and now, the incredible @evil.island.band. Johnny has, directly and indirectly, had an effect on who I and thousands of other people are through his work and outright refusal to be anyone else but himself. We dive into that, his early beginnings in Seattle, staying defiant in the face of abuse, following The Blood Brothers’ reunion by forming Evil Island and so much more.

Johnny is the definition of a North Star artist for me, and I’m so thankful for how generous with his time he was. I’ll be forever grateful for his work and the incoming Evil Island music is going to blow people away.

You can read our full, unedited conversation at the 🔗 in bio.

Summer done. Swipe to the end for a surprise. by @limitedmitch

@johnglacier is an @i_d cover star ✨ This is a very special moment for a number of reasons. It feels like a culmination of many, many years of hard work which greatly precede my five years working with her. Even if you see the effort that’s gone into everything she’s built in that time, there’s no way you could be aware of the of the obstacles that have been in front of her the whole way. She’s handled everything with grace and style and a drive to succeed that’s seen her grow publicly year on year as an absolute star in her own right across music and fashion. I’m extremely proud of her.

The story from @_alexkessler is one of the best things I’ve ever seen written about John. It explores not only her forthcoming new album, Lack Of Joy Is Death, which is due out later this year, but it goes deeper into the health issues that she’s navigated so powerfully, and a bit more about who she is; which I hope dispels the myth that she is this unapproachable enigma, when she is anything but!

Thank you to the whole i-D team for their enthusiasm, patience and understanding throughout putting this together. It’s such an incredible feature that I’ve been so excited for people to see for themselves.

Recapping on some work from this year and it’s quite insane to me that I’ve had the chance to work on one of the decade’s most anticipated, and best, metal albums from a band that are so far beyond the realms of everything else out there, they defy classification. @loatheasone could’ve sat back and rested on their laurels to recreate what is one of the most universally loved and influential records of the last few years, but with A Stranger To You, they instead redefined their own sound and with it, the sound of heavy music to create a new blueprint. Each musician within this group went above and beyond to not only sharpen their own tools, but also to collectively strengthen. The results will stand the test of time as something really special. Thank you so much to every member of the band - it’s always such a joy to work with friends who implicitly trust your judgement when you’re working towards redefining perceptions of what something can be. It’s been a joy working with the @culturewave.la and @sharptonerecs teams, who are both incredible when it comes to achieving results. Two covers, some incredible reviews from the likes of @guardiang2, @nmemagazine, @kerrangmagazine_ and more, and the band’s first #1. Thank you to every editor and journalist who has supported this incredible band so far, there’s more to be done. by @limitedmitch

I was running around so much at @outbreakfest London that I didn’t really get a chance to take any pictures, so I’m mainly stealing them from people more talented than I am. Tags are at the bottom and on the images themselves.

Despite not getting to see a lot of music myself, you could feel the palpable atmosphere of excitement and joy in the year. I think this year’s London instalment of Outbreak, in partnership with All Points East, showed just how broad the scope of the festival can be. It proves that the counterculture isn’t reserved to one genre or form of music, and that it’s an energy that ties a particular community together. I think it also showed just how spectacular Outbreak is as a festival whether in a 10,000 capacity space in Manchester or a 50,000 capacity park in London. It’s a festival and operation tied down by some of the best people I’ve ever had the chance to work with and I’m extremely grateful to be a small cog in the whole thing.

Thank you to every journalist who came to experience such a special day, all the bands who graciously gave up their time for press, and also the team at Outside for killing it on the press alongside me. A special shout out has to go to @hdurham2, who really stepped up to the plate and covered a tonne of interviews for me while I was roaming around herding troops and spreading myself thinly. You’re a natural and I was so lucky to have you assist me.

The rest are videos and images I compiled from the incredible things I did get to see: the triumphant return of icons @s4lem, @jpegmafia laying waste to the main stage and raising pulses, mine and @__joshuaedwards__’ superstar @eternallyrin filling out the X Stage early doors (more on her very soon), and the absolute LEGEND on East Stage security who helped me drop off some media bands when I had to run off.

What a day ❤️ by @limitedmitch
