POSTS STORIES REELS

Join author and illustrator Lisa Anchin for a very special, spooky Halloween Storytime! She'll be reading from her new early chapter book Maud and the Very Eventful Week!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Follow an adorable little vampire named Maud through a week of ever-so-gently-spooky adventures in this charming story.

Who would have known on Monday that the week ahead would be such a busy one? It all starts when Maud finds a teapot that is obviously haunted (and very hungry). EEEK! The days continue with Maud’s attempt to sell spiders (and juice) from a sidewalk stand; a mega-toothy discovery; a ghost family taking over the dollhouse; and a visit to Agnes the witch, who brews up a dynamite soup. Then comes Maud’s yard sale, which is a lot of work but a great success, rounding out a very full week. But wait, could that be a teapot coming around again, on Sunday? In this slightly gothic tour through the days of the week, the delight is in the details as illustrations portray Maud and her family and friends among the familiar objects and activities of childhood, with just enough of a quirky twist to please the young vampire lovers among us. by @lisa.anchin

Hey friends! It is going to be a Maud filled October. I’m doing a bunch of spooky season storytimes around NYC and two different book festivals. I hope you’ll join me for stories and live drawing and crafts. Looking forward to meeting you and your young readers! 🖤🦇

Some of the treats were a little tricksy, but Maud preferred them that way.

Happy nearly Halloween, folks!

How could her parents say no? Just look at that face! Maud was certain they’d let her keep him.

The hastiest of hasty Drawlloween drawings for Toad day. It’s been such a delight following everyone’s work this month. Hopefully I can squeeze in at least one more. Happy nearly Halloween, Drawlloweenies!

Maud wasn’t entirely certain, but she thought that the full moon had precipitated the transformation in the pumpkin patch. Whatever the cause, this year’s pumpkins were tiny terrors.

Oof. Life has been totally batty lately, and I’ve fallen very far behind. I attempted this one—a triple combination of prompts, pumpkin, tiny terror, and moon—yesterday while waiting for my kiddo at swim practice. After I’d finished, I wasn’t satisfied with leaving it in pencil. So I used a spare hour today to redo it and give it a proper Drawlloween treatment.

The hallway mirror was a mystery to Maud. Most days it showed her reflection, which was to say, nothing at all. But every so often, she’d find a ghoulish face peering out at her.

Another post catching up and combining prompts—mirror and ghoul for today.

Maud heard a soft scritching sound at the door. She was very pleased to see the cat again. The little cat never stayed for long, but it was always eventful when she was around.

I’ve spent most of Drawlloween working on the Maud display window for Books of Wonder, so I’ve fallen way behind on my daily Mauds. I’m going to try to combine some of the missed prompts, so here’s strange shadow and lantern.

This past weekend I had the privilege of installing a Maud display window at @booksofwonder in NYC. It’ll be up through Halloween. I hope you get a chance to see it in person. I’ll also be back at Books of Wonder this coming Sunday, 10/25 for story-time at 11:30am.

A giant thank you to Peter and Rosalind for the opportunity, to the staff for all of their help and for being such incredible champions of Maud’s book, to @ezrahrahrah for emotional support and picking up all of the dropped balls, to @alysonemily for crafting help and supply sourcing, and to @katemilfordnagspeake for so, so many things, including being my installation-day buddy.
