🚕 Animated Painting for @lisabisbeeart Midtown Manhattan Overlooking Hudson River New York City, Oil Painting Series 2022-2023 by @lisabisbeeart
Lisa Bisbee is a highly skilled oil painter who splits her time between the bustling streets of New York City and the serene landscapes of North Carolina. She has a deep appreciation for architecture and urban culture. Lisa describes her process below: These paintings are inspired by my life experiences, using my own photos as reference, I'll plan the composition when I snap the photo, conjuring up the linework or color palette in my minds’ eye, so when I go to paint the scene back at my studio, I’m ready. I prefer to work on painted oil backgrounds already dried. Some of these backgrounds are so thick in texture, I’ll nickname it “chunky oatmeal.” When starting with a wet background, I’ll mimic the sgraffito technique by scratching into the wet surface to reveal the white-gessoed canvas underneath. In this manner, I’m able to sketch out the subject in my composition. Thinning out the pigment with walnut oil, I’ll glaze more layers lightly so that the underpainting peeks through. I love when the contrast of colors pops off the canvas, making my mouth water, like eye-candy. Instead of looking for realism in a natural light, find the colors that bring about the fun factor, a joyful interpretation, seeing the world interpreted by a dreamer, a romantic outlook. When I'm using a limited palette, I focus on the values of light and dark, often enhancing a wide-angle perspective. The New York City series of 50 or so depict our adventures through the city, in bright vivid hues. The main colors in the palette include neon pinks and purples, bright yellows and blue illustrating city scenes in an altered perspective. The cartooned cars in traffic, the crowds of scribbled people, the distorted skyscrapers all become characters in my visual story. Wanting to emphasize the fun factor, I used fluorescent oil paint by Gapka, just to add a cheesy punch when I turn on the black light to unveil a glow. At this point, I’m looking for a collaboration where the series has space to be exhibited as a whole. @lisabisbeeart www.lisanisbeeart.com #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #originalartwork #artistsofinstagram by @lisabisbeeart
Lisa Bisbee paints bright colors to show the joy and excitement of urban adventures. She depicts both typical city scenes and architectural landmarks by leading architects such as Le Corbusier’s United Nations Building, Daniel Burnham’s Flatiron building and Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus Transportation Hub. In an article published in artfairmag.com about Artexpo NY 2024. Laura Lati wrote, “My chosen booth was by New York artist, Lisa Bisbee, who paints New York City’s landscapes with a sunset pink palette to shape the brownstones, water towers and iconic sights of this dreamlike city.” Lisa Bisbee describes her technique, “My painting process is intuitive and freeform. I rarely use rulers or projectors, preferring to sketch the composition with a fine script-liner brush. I enjoy distorting proportions, arranging elements in a way that feels unexpected. My love for this style might stem from my time studying photography at SCAD, where I was drawn to the surreal perspective of wide-angle lenses. Texture is something I prioritize even above other design elements, though color remains my primary focus. I use color more as a tool for contrast, layering light and dark shades rather than striving for realism, until the composition feels balanced.” Represented by both Signet Contemporary Art Chelsea in London and Douglas Albert Gallery in Pennsylvania, Lisa is currently painting scenes of London, U.K. and State College, Pennsylvania. @lisabisbeeart www.lisabisbeeart.com @signetcontemporaryart.chelsea @douglasalbertgallery #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #originalartwork #artistsofinstagram by @lisabisbeeart
ARIST OF THE WEEK!! Lisa Bisbee is a contemporary oil painter whose work is shaped by a lifelong connection to both the excitement of city life and the beauty of place. Raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania, with deep family ties to New York City, she developed an early appreciation for urban culture, architecture, and the emotional experience of moving through different environments. Bisbee has spent decades creating work inspired by her travels, personal experiences, and passion for transforming what she sees into vibrant, expressive paintings. Her work is especially known for its bold use of color and its ability to turn everyday scenes into something magical. In her ongoing “Bright Lights, Pink City” series, Bisbee captures snapshots of life in New York City and London, portraying everything from crosswalks and street corners to iconic landmarks. Influenced by Fauvism, she uses vivid neon pinks, oranges, purples, yellows, and blues to create dreamlike cityscapes that feel joyful, romantic, and full of movement. She has also created a special State College/Penn State feature, bringing her distinctive style and vision to our special community! by @lisabisbeeart
From nearly a decade ago in 2016, my exhibit with black and white oil paintings sold out at Pete Frey’s beer establishment in New Bern. I have treasured memories of escapades at Brewery 99’s first location in a cinderblock hut around the back parking lot. We sat an oversized picnic table, watched people paint the 99 sign, played foursquare, listened to funky bands, ate food truck concoctions, and in general, had mind expanding conversations. Years later, the expansion of Brewery 99 ended up in a beautiful building designed by the architect Marvin Maune. Now they have added so many more offerings and events, so definitely look them up if you ever happen to find yourself in North Carolina. Ask for a Confignorant, cheers! by @lisabisbeeart
My expedition to the Animal Sanctuary reminded me of Jurassic Park, the perimeter is fenced. These wild creatures can jump up to 16 feet high vertically with all that muscle in their hind legs. On the elevated walkway, we are standing no less than 15 feet above the tiger. There wasn’t a top to the tiger cage and that reminds me of the tragic story about a tiger who jumped out of his cage. Below us, the wild tiger decides that he wants to show off and started pouncing and roaring. My heart was pounding listening to the powerful roar, it all happened so fast, I caught a photo before the pounce, grateful that I could take the memory back to the studio and paint it for you. by @lisabisbeeart
A glimpse of the past... welcome to beautiful Pennsylvania, where I grew up. I painted a series of 50 landscapes showcase a vivid color palette and an exaggerated perspective of the the Appalachian mountain range, indigenous plants, farmlands, and beaten paths. Traveling for my Uncle’s birthday, we took a detour off the bumper to bumper I95. Took photos along the way of the gorgeous scenery for inspiration to paint back at my studio. . . . . Another trip into the past where I grew up in the mountains. A magical mystical land of imagination and creativity, such a romantic way of looking back. Sure, there was strife and struggle, yet isn’t it more pleasant now to look for the sunshine and the colors that bring joy. . . . . Heading into the past, showing my techniques and works in progress from years ago while I spend time working on a new project which will likely take about a month before it is up and running and it is something for us to look forward to! Some of you may have seen these old videos of mine, so please bear with me, and thanks again for all your support and encouragement! . . . .
