POSTS STORIES REELS

Some of the books I’ve read this summer!! I had a little bit of a summerween thing going on in July with Eat the Ones you Love and the Small Spaces series! I’ve only included the first book in Small Spaces here because it was the only one I really liked tbh. The others were fun but just didn’t have that same atmosphere imo. The Second Dungeon Crawler Carl and Queen of Faces were def the highlights of August! And I'm actually read the third DCC book right now! by @literarynervana

In June I spent two weeks bopping about Italy with my family, and it was such an amazing time that it gave me a post-vacation hangover! The first two days back to work were brutal!

I wanted to read books that were thematically appropriate for the trip. I ended up reading three non-fiction books (Fulvia, Leonardo, and Art & Society) which is a lot for me! I enjoyed them all more than the fiction books I read (The Wolf Den and The Dry Heart) which surprised me. I also got like 75% of the way through My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante but wasn’t really gripped by it and then I accidentally left my iPad with my mother (who lives in a different country) which is what I like to read my ebooks on, so I couldn’t be bothered to finish tbh.

Books Read:
- The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper
- The Dry Heart by Natalia Ginzburg
- Fulvia by Jane Draycott
- Leonardo & The Last Supper by Ross King
- Art & Society in Italy: 1350 - 1500 by Evelyn Welch by @literarynervana

Recent hikes and trips have got me taking lots of pretty landscape photos, and I’ve decided to go back to this style of post which I do really like! I deleted my ugly January wrap up LOL because I couldn’t stand it.

I also have some recent reads which I would love to chat about! Dungeon Crawler Carl is as good as everyone says it is, and I’ve heard the series just gets better which is exciting!!

My ratings for Bury Our Bones and Dawn of the North are both actually 3.5/5, but I really couldn’t be bothered with a half star 😂. I had the same issue with both of these - they felt too long for the plot! Both were in the 600-700 page range (on my iPad) and in both cases there were large chunks that I felt were filler. I found this especially disappointing for Bury Our Bones, since the characters are so well developed and the writing is so beautiful! by @literarynervana

Who me?? A post??

This is a review for both books in this duology since I rated them the same way- 4 stars!! Both of these books came to me at perfect times, when I just wanted something fun and indulgent and to turn my brain off for a bit. These books are so fun and so camp that they definitely deliver, and yet the stories have a ton more heart than I was expecting as well!

Both books gain emotional death from the terrible parenting of Mr and Mrs Claud (LOL) and how this affects their children. They have abandonment a d self worth issues, and people pleasing tendencies and a lack of sense of self! It’s handled quite well and the serious moments do stop the books from being like TOO over the top!

I enjoy the worldbuilding, which really reminds me of Rise of the Guardians, and the characters who are so dorky and genuine! My only slight complaint is that I felt that the emotional damage from the mom wasn’t addressed quite as fully as in the first book for the dad!

I would love another book in this series!! I feel like this has Riordan worldbuilding levels of possibility lol with how many holidays there are all over the world!! by @literarynervana

I’m alive!! And I’ve been on vacation! With my mother! We have spent the last three weeks bouncing around the UK and when we were not walking on 15-20 kilometres a day we did a lot of reading! So here is a little vacation reading recap of everything I’ve read the last few weeks:

- Once More With Feeling 3.5/5
- Lady Susan 5/5
- Dog Songs 5/5
- Dragonfall 3.5/5
- Bad Summer People 4/5
- Brighton Rock 4/5
- Greta & Valdin 4/5

My fav was definitely Lady Susan by Jane Austen which I had never heard of before. It’s a hilarious very short (like 100 pages) story told in letters about this promiscuous home wrecking widow named Susan! It’s probably tied for my fav Austen novel with Pride & Prejudice! by @literarynervana

Some of my March and April reads! I haven’t been that active on her but I have been reading!!

First off, I actually read two middle grade books, which I don’t normally gravitate towards anymore, and really loved them! They were so fun and whimsical! But still really heartwarming and had a great found family message! There’s one more in this series I believe and I will be reading it!

I’ve also read a nonfiction book about mushrooms! Which I enjoyed but also wished it covered more of mushroom physiology. And finally we go back to Fourth Wing which did really consume me for a bit there 😂

I have also read three more books which I just couldn’t be bothered to make a whole new slide for LOLOL! So see below for all the reviews of my recent reads!!

- The House at the Edge of Magic 4/5
- The Tower at the End of Time 4/5
- The Kingdoms 4.5/5
- The Nightmare Before Kissmas 4/5
- The Bone Season 2/5
- The Female Nude: Art, Obscenity, and Sexuality 4/5
- Drive Me Home 3.5/5
- The Mushroom at the End of the World 3/5
- Fourth Wing 3.75/5 by @literarynervana

If you didn’t know I was reading this now you do!! I honestly don’t know what to say about this book that I didn’t already scream over on my stories.

I definitely enjoyed it! And I think live reacting helped me enjoy it more than I would’ve actually 😂 it was awesome getting to poke fun at this book and laugh with other people.

So yeah I did enjoy it but I can’t say I took it very seriously tbh. Which I think is the best way to enjoy any Romantasy! It did have a lot more plot and dragons than I was expecting and the writing was good enough and the plot did surprise me at times! That being said it still falls into lots of the Romantasy pitfalls regarding the romance, which was like fun but idk Xaden is not my fav book boyfriend. He’s just okay.

Violent as a main character was good! She was smart and resourceful and I did like her! The dragons were by far the best part and I would appreciate more world building which is apparently what people didn’t enjoy about the second one so maybe I’ll like that one even more!

But I’m not ready to commit to actually buying the series so while I will continue to read it I shall be waiting patiently for book two on Libby!

Sorry the post is hideous 😂 I actually wanted to do a review but didn’t have the motivation to put a lot of effort in. by @literarynervana

I’m late to start my readathon but I am very hopeful that I’ll be able to get through my three goal books. The Blighted Stars features a FTM trans character, and my newest fav male character ever - Tarquin.

Compound Fracture is a book that I’ve been meaning to read forever (same with The Spirit Bares It’s Teeth). I really adored Hell Followed With Us and am hopeful that I’ll like AJ White’s other work!

I don’t think I’ll be able to get to my “maybe” books, idk if I’ll have the time, but they will be read at some point in my life! by @literarynervana

⭐️⭐️.5 (Spoilers!)

I got my version of this book at Persephone Books in Bath! Which I was under the impression only sold books by women authors. So I was greatly disappointed to learn this was written by a man lol! It was also written in like 1920??

And I think it shows it how this middle aged man thinks about his young (like college age) female neighbour. It’s very like overtly predatory but he always comments on how pretty she is. I read this entire book in fear that they would get together but thank god that didn’t happen!

Besides that the main male character is incredibly self-important and spends most of the book discussing his personal hobbies (chickens of all things) rather than the impending doom of the moon crashing into earth (oh yeah that’s what the book is about - the moon crashing into earth).

The final nail in the coffin is that the moon doesn’t destroy the world, it js in fact the world war that breaks out over the oil found in the moon. Which is a very depressing but I guess realistic thing.

Yeah, wouldn’t recommend unless you really like chickens. by @literarynervana

Mushrooms have been haunting me lately - and I’m not mad at it!! From the surprise mushroom-iness of The Blighted Stars to a non-fiction book rec by a colleague (The Mushroom at the End of the World), they are everywhere!!

So here are some weird mushroom books, that I’ve loved, that are on my TBR, and that are also on my TBR but are non fiction LOL.

If you’ve read any of these, particularly the non-fiction, let me know what you think!! by @literarynervana

Finally I have read Carmilla!!! And tbh it was just okay. I really really wanted to love it! And while I did like it, there were a few things that stopped me from loving it.

I did like the premise and the plot and the writing! All very fun and well developed. It was interesting to see the start of vampire lore and what things were the same and different from the typical pop culture vampires today. Like for example that Carmilla could turn into a beastie (not a bat), and that she could go out in the sun. I also liked the relationship between Carmilla and Laura and how it was portrayed. I also thought the parallels between Laura feeling compelled and internalized homophobia a very interesting (intentional?) take! This was something I would’ve liked to have been developed even more.

That’s my big thing with this book, I basically just wish there was more! The book felt too short for me. I wanted more development, I wanted more details, more suspense! The only other thing I have to complain about is that I didn’t think the novel was very scary. And I don’t think that’s a product of its time, for example The Island of Dr Moreau did give me goosebumps when I read it. I just don’t think the feeling of horror was quite as intense as I would’ve liked it. Which is a crazy thing to say because I HATE horror movies and yet occasionally I will read a horror novel. by @literarynervana
