And just like that, folks, we are OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS! 📣

LIT accepts work across all genres: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, hybrid, translation, reviews, and art. We want to see your weird, challenging, insightful, playful, wonky, transgressive creations. Send us something that frightens you, that electrifies you, work that might not fit anywhere else.

To celebrate, here’s a particularly exciting excerpt from the Hybrid section of our Fall 2025 issue, from “Love in the time of distance” by Shana Ross:

“Let me be interesting without flaying myself. It’s too late to vivisect once the wounds are open but I can bare them. Bear them. She says she loves me but she would take my picture at an angle, peeled back and pinned open. Is it better if someone else’s hands do the typing? Disco nails and a daisy wheel, metal and real, more true than anything I can say about myself. I cast myself in wax, ruffled like lettuce and dipped green, eternal in the glass display. I have always been a lie to stoke your hungers. She tells my story, she talks about me like I have always been real.”

Summer Memories at the Autumn Equinox, Poetry Edition. There was a day this summer when @newschoolwriting poets sailed across a river and set up camp on an island. We took turns administering curative lines of poetry, looking into the future, lazing about on the grass, mingling with icons, reading and listening to poems. Thanks to the editors of @litmagazine1999 , as well as New School journals @inquisitiveeater, and @12thstreetonline. Thanks to @poetrysocietyny and all of our new and old friends for another enchanted New York City Poetry Festival. by @litmagazine1999

“I learned, after my father took her car, after the studio had been packed up and moved with my grandmother to a nursing home, after she died alone in her room, that my grandmother had been funny. I was standing in the antiseptic space that served as her new studio, so different from the old magic cave, holding a small maroon album of 4 x 6” photographs. Each photo was of a painting, and each painting was accompanied by an index card that told its story... There, among formal likenesses of ancestors and neighbors, of American generals and Indigenous chiefs, were three watercolor portraits of actor Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck smiling. Tom Selleck gazing into the distance. Tom Selleck in his underwear.”

Excerpt from Mary Cate Stevenson’s (@mc_stevenson) “Tom Selleck in His Underwear,” featured in the nonfiction section of LIT 43.

“My father enters the room in a disordered manner. The door swings open with excessive force, slams against the wall, then recoils a few inches, trembling before surrendering to the weight of its own wood. The impact tears me entirely out of sleep... For a few seconds, I do not know where I am. The ceiling, which I recognize every morning, seems displaced...

My father remains by the door, breathing with an intensity that suggests urgency, although there is, apparently, no fire, robbery, or death in the family.

“Get up,” he says, without preamble.”

This excerpt from “My Father, Still” by JV Dias (@jovidiol), featured in LIT 43, traces a son’s memories in the wake of far-right former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat and the unrest that followed. “Do in some countries our shadows fall off?
I found this question from my daughter in an old notebook.
We had been walking in her father’s village,
Practicing the language.
It was hot, and our shadows were dark on the road.
That was the most plainly I ever saw myself.
We must have been holding hands.”

— from Maggie Greaves’s “Autobiography,” featured in LIT 43, alongside artwork by Beth Kephart (@bethkephartnow).

In our latest Global Voices feature, Iranian poet, translator, and editor Ali Asadollahi discusses topics ranging from the legacy of classical Persian poetry and the rigors of literary translation to the effects of censorship and surveillance on contemporary writers and literary life:

“Translation has never been only a private exercise for me. Persian poetry contains many remarkable poets and individual poems that deserve a wider readership than they currently receive. Translation allows me not only to learn from literary traditions beyond Persian, but also to introduce readers to voices that might otherwise remain inaccessible to them.”

“Late that night, Sara lay awake beside her husband, lightly snoring, content in the little nest he’d made of the hotel pillows. His chest rose and fell and she reminded herself how lucky she was. They had money for vacations like this, a faithful marriage, two financially solvent adult children.

Their son appeared happily wed, with a job helping nonprofits raise funds. Their daughter was less settled. Her last fling, a bartender-actor, had “ghosted” Kirsten. Sara had asked what that meant.

‘Vanished,’ Kirsten had said. ‘Didn’t even bother to say goodbye.’”
