Red testaments.
A body of work by Kolawole Olalekan

Acrylic on canvas
2023-2024.

Red testament—emerges from an exploration of the human form as a vessel carrying stories of vulnerability, memory, and resilience. Each canvas, saturated with deep crimson and gestural marks, channels both the turbulence and tenderness found within the body’s
contours and the surrouding lines that guides events to come.

Kolawole olalekan.
Acrylic on canvas, 2025.

• Let’s talk about the monochromatic rendition. Why is that?

Ans: It all started during the peak of black art movement in Lagos and it’s a subtle protest to black art movement because the movement brainwashed and directed almost everyone around me towards the same direction or style, Artists painted single or two figures ( seated or standing) and skin tones black or dark brown flat or detailed. so it prompted me to ask; what’s Black Art, is it the colour or the people? “if it’s the colour then I can paint my figures white or any other colours apart from black and brown to connote the art; blue art, red art etc.
