Why I Hate the Stereotype of Being a “Strong Black Woman” On February 16, 2017, I attempted to take my own life. Halfway through, I stopped. I walked back into my Social Studies class like nothing had happened. No one knew, and I never told anyone. And honestly, I doubt anyone could have guessed what I had just been doing in the bathroom. So, I can’t even be mad tbh. Years have passed, and while I don’t need to be placed on a watchlist or sent to a psych ward, that day left a mark. Maybe it’s the lingering anxiety or the depressive episodes, but since then, I’ve grown a strong hatred for the stereotype of the “Strong Black Woman” and anything that perpetuates it. Words I’ve grown to violently hate: “Oh, you’re so strong.” (Unless you’re talking about my big muscles.) “You’re so confident.” “Independent.” “You’re so resilient.” I despise these words simply because of what they imply. They’ve been attached to me for as long as I can remember, since I could comprehend English. Is there anything inherently wrong with these traits? No. But people hear them and assume that strength means needing less support, that confidence means mistreatment won’t affect you, that resilience means you don’t require care or comfort. Mental health isn’t just a solo journey. The strength of a community can carry more weight than most people realize. Go give someone a hug for God’s sake. I’ve felt misunderstood for so long because whenever I open up, I’m met with shock as if vulnerability contradicts the image others have assigned me. As if someone overflowing with positivity and happiness couldn’t possibly be carrying so much pain. For years, I debated whether I should speak on this publicly. I’ve drafted and deleted this five times. I don’t know what finally pushed me to share today. Maybe it’s social media, which flattens people into 2 dimensional versions of themselves. Maybe it’s the “IG baddie” label I can’t shake that sometimes feels dehumanizing. But here is my attempt to humanize myself, to add depth, to be seen in my entirety. The happiest people you know are probably the saddest. Please check in on someone today especially a Black woman. Peace and Love, Iveren by @lizz.el
