Gallerie dell’Accademia 03

@gallerieaccademiavenezia

Accademia, during a quiet afternoon.

I came across this room where the lighting was eccentric. At first, I didn’t quite understand why there were these orange lights around the windows. After a while, I guessed that these were to ‘neutralise’ the blue cast from the windows.

Gallerie dell’Accademia 02

Accademia during a quiet afternoon.
I came across this room where there was not a single spot of ‘emptiness’. The paintings were contextualised with wooden panels and ornate ceilings instead of a while wall.

Extraction Mark

Daedalian Kiln 1, no. 02
Lasa Marmo, extracted marble set against mountain.

I was lucky to be taken into this quarry by Lasa Marmo with @ozruh_official @troyedige. I had two cameras, my Bessa R2A and Leica M10R. While documenting the process of marble extraction, I witnessed human ingenuity and violence, and the beauty shaped by their coexistence. Extraction was a transformative process.

Lasa Marmo is a marble supplier whose stones are sourced from a quarry on Jennwand Mountain. With deposit of up to 30 million cubic metres, the quarry has one of the biggest marble deposits in the world.

The dimensions inside the quarry are impressive. With a width of 20m and a height of up to 40m, even heavy machineries are dwarfed against the giant scale of the excavated chambers.

Walking away from Melk abbey, my girlfriend and I came across this castle ruin. We were very thirsty, because we didn’t bring any water for our walk which the local guide told us will be 15-20minutes. He clearly didn’t know what he was talking about (or maybe he didn’t like us) and it took us 90minutes. Across this ruin, there was a small cafe, a park and a lake where people were swimming.

Melk abbey was originally founded in 11th century next to Wachau Valley in Lower Austria. The current building was built between 1702 and 1736 by Jacob Prandtauer in Baroque style.

The the scale of the abbey is truly unique–it is considered to be one of the largest abbeys in Europe. When I was there, I focused on the towering effect of the architecture. I imagine the abbey’s vertical presence acted as a religious beacon for all those who came to visit it.

A small project I did back in 2024. I was with my girlfriend and we walked 2-3miles to get the best view of the abbey and some good shots of the surrounding areas. We came across a river, a forest, a castle ruin and a viper which I thought was a stick.
