This film swept me away at the NY Film Festival, finding my soul stirred by our protagonist's quest to find herself, jumping from one choice to the next, only to fail over and over again, judging herself every step of the way.
With a light rhythm and without taking herself too seriously, we follow several years around Julie’s 30th birthday while she navigates her life choices, breaking bridges and hearts along the way, only to find that every step she’s taken and every person she has loved has made her life worth living. I can only reinforce, after a second viewing, this feeling that we have to live passionately, always following our hearts, no matter the consequences. In the end, we are left to reminisce about these chapters in our lives, these moments we loved... and the ones we didn’t.
Don’t miss the sublime smoking scene and every Renate Reinsve’s (Julie) scene .

Tatiana Huezo, the director of Prayers for the Stolen, brings her expertise as a documentary filmmaker to transport us to a Mexican town lost in the mountains, where the men are missing and the women have nowhere to run, while they’re forced to hide their daughters underground.
Girls are raised to hide their developing bodies and cut their hair short, families disappear in the middle of the night, fear is embedded in the fog but coming out of age is still spellbinding. Huezo spares us the violence, still making us feel a permanent dread for what’s coming while rooting for the 3 girls that take our hearts by a storm. Don’t miss the beautiful scene where cellphones almost seem like fireflies, echoing the yearning voices that are barely listened to...

Limbo takes you to a place you’ve never been, to a place you wish you will never have to visit, a tiny island in Scotland where even it’s inhabitants get lost in their own translation. And you will do so with the warmest smile and tears in your eyes.
You take this personal trip with 4 refugees that had to flee their countries for different reasons, but neither of them can go back, the bridge burned, while they find a place they can call home. They attend culture adaptation classes (I could watch these scenes over and over again), walk around and wait for their lives to change... knowing they may never will.
Amir, a young Syrian refugee with a broken stare, carries his grandfather’s oud everywhere, a musical instrument that represents all he left behind: his family, his culture, his artistry, his heaven turned hell. An instrument he can’t get himself to play, for fears that his own sound won’t find resonance in this Limbo. His relationship with Farhad, his roommate, is so compassionate and funny and makes you believe in human kindness but don’t miss Helga and Boris, they had me laughing out loud.
A witty comedy that will go deep inside your heart and break it a bit. It’s been a while since I see so many characters warm up my screen in different directions. Please take this Scottish trip and open your hearts to all the refugees that are going through this process. Thank you, Ben Sharrock for directing this little gem.
