Peak season has two surges, and most plans only cover one.

Orders peak on Black Friday. Returns peak 28 days later, on Boxing Day. Boxing Day through January 31st is what we’re calling Q5, and it brings in a third of your season’s return volume.

➡️ 70% of brands say returns shape whether a customer buys again.
➡️Only 10% treat that wave as a real operational risk.

We broke down what each phase of peak demands and how to walk into it covered, not just surviving it.

BFCM officially kicks off peak season for ecommerce brands.

At our last event in LA, we asked some ecomm operators for their hottest take. Almost every answer circled back to the same thing: BFCM isn’t two days anymore.

The data backs them up, the “biggest shopping days” keep creeping earlier, and when brands expect them to land shapes how they staff, stock, and plan.

We’ll let the comments be the place for where brands can debate when BFCM promos should really start and end.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough: peak season stretches later too. Returns don’t peak at two weeks after black friday - a third of a season’s total returns land in January alone. Our team started calling that stretch ‘Q5’.

Peak season = more sales, more returns… and more fraud.

While most returns are made in good faith, fraudsters know it’s the perfect time to exploit return policies. Our data shows just how much high-risk return attempts increased this holiday season:

📊 US: +22%
📊 UK: +33%
📊 AU/NZ: +22%

So, what can retailers do to stop fraud in its tracks, without making returns harder for loyal customers?

In our latest blog, we break down what’s behind the rise in fraud and share strategies for keeping your return process secure and customer-friendly.
