Ayaat's rendition of Someone Like You by @adele , part of her riyaz for the Trinity piano exams. I thought I'd capture it for posterity because whenever she plays it, it manages to soothe my anxiety-addled brain.

The onset of autumn was always a season of festivities for all of us who grew up in Assam (and most of the Eastern states), irrespective of the faith to which our families ascribed. In Assam, Durga Puja was the most visible one, while the more sombre observance of Srimanta Sankardeva's tithi, or birth anniversary, usually coincided with Dashami (I don't know the technicalities, but this was generally the case).

This year though, all celebrations were subdued in the Axomiya community here in Noida because we lost our voice, quite literally. Zubeenda's untimely and tragic death made many of us older millennials grow up overnight. We saw our youth disappear in the chandan-wood smoke rising from his funeral pyre, and the existential bell of our mortality rang resoundingly as birds circled the grounds on that fateful evening in Sonapur.

Durga Puja this year was less about gaiety and more about a warm hand reaching out to friends to connect, to share a meal, or to swap stories. While we live, we endure; we learn new ways to cope; we find hope in the many beautiful stories of harmony coming out of Assam that restore our faith in our shared humanity.

On another note, I love collecting tribal jewellery from all over the Northeast like the neckpiece here, and the mekhela sador is my 19-yr-old, almost worn-out, Mishing red buwa set.
