Joya: AiR / Martha Barr + Louise Hardy / UK “Mother and daughter artists Louise Hardy and Martha Barr undertook a shared residency at Joya: AiR, where the opportunity to work alongside one another became both a professional and deeply personal exchange. Louise developed a new body of paintings through sustained studio practice, refining an ongoing investigation into landscape, materiality and image-making. Martha immersed herself in the surrounding terrain, working directly with locally excavated marl to produce sculptural forms that emerged from close physical engagement with the ecology of the site. Together, the residency fostered a dialogue between painting and sculpture, intuition and process, while strengthening a creative relationship shaped by years of shared artistic conversation. Over the years we have welcomed artists from every stage of their careers, but it is rare to witness two generations of the same family sharing a residency in such a generous and mutually enriching way. There was never any sense of one artist leading the other; instead, each practice seemed to sharpen and deepen in the presence of the other. Their conversations continued from studio to landscape, through shared meals and long walks, reminding me that artistic practice is sustained not only by discipline and critical enquiry, but also by care, trust and the relationships that quietly shape who we become as artists. It was a privilege to witness, and one of those residencies that remains long in the memory”.
