I wanted to share my own experience as someone who runs a dress rental business.

There’s a side to dress rentals that customers don’t always see.

Every week, dresses come back with stains, makeup, fake tan, food, drinks, dirt and significant damage. I’ve been left cleaning everything from vomit and period stains to faecal stains on garments 🤢🤢 I spend a lot of time cleaning, repairing, steaming and restoring these dresses so they can be rented again.

And honestly, it can be incredibly disheartening to see the amount of care and respect go down weekly.

What has also become increasingly difficult is the lack of consideration towards small businesses. When something is damaged, returned late or goes wrong with a booking, we’re often the ones left trying to fix the problem - sometimes while also dealing with unnecessary disrespect. (I have added some of the nicer messages.. believe it or not..) 🥲

I’ve had situations where a late return or damaged dress has affected the next person’s booking, leaving me scrambling to find an alternative. I hate having to do this, and I know how disappointing it is for the customer.

I completely understand that accidents happen, especially with the weather and conditions in New Zealand. What’s difficult is when there’s little care for the garment, no accountability when something goes wrong, and then disrespect towards us when we’re left dealing with the consequences.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I put a lot of effort into trying to keep everyone happy and everything running smoothly but it’s getting harder and harder..

So when you rent from a small business, please remember there is a person on the other side of that booking - someone cleaning your dress after you return it, repairing it when needed, and making sure the next customer gets the same experience you did.

A little more care, communication and respect would honestly go a very long way 🤍 by @loveit_loanit
