“Trump will use his veto if Congress tries to take back power on trade policy”

Professor Stephanie Rickard says that despite the huge shift in political power the US Midterm elections, we’re unlikely to see big consequences for international trade as Trump will use his veto power to stop any attempts by Congress to make significant changes on tariffs or trade policy.

What an honour it was to host Sir Jeremy Hunt, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, last week at the Holborn Union!

Sir Jeremy’s invaluable analysis of and insight into the state of the political and economic affairs of our country and world, his encouragement for our generation, and anecdotal experience of his time in government, was hugely insightful, and we are very grateful for his time, especially on the eve of the Budget!

Sir Jeremy’s attendance at the Holborn Union marked the second instalment of our “In Conversation Withs”, following on from Lord Neil Kinnock, and we have our second debate: “This House Believes the time for Assisted Dying has come” taking place next Tuesday 10th November. Tickets are going fast so be sure to not miss out - link in bio!

‼️Hold back the beast‼️

Listen to Professor Torun Dewan's most recent research showcase describing how prime ministers can incentivise their ministers in effective cabinet governance.

Navigating the problem that a prime minister cannot simply pay a minister more, Torun's research investigates the levers of incentive that a prime minister can wield.

Yet, highlighting the constraints of a shallow talent pool, Torun's research focuses on the big question: when and where do you play your star minister? Here, when looking to keep cabinet ministers incentivised, Torun suggests that it may sometimes be best to hold back the beast...

What makes a good leader in a government's cabinet? 🔍

In his latest research showcase, Professor of Government at @londonschoolofeconomics, Torun Dewan, takes us through his ongoing research on cabinet governance.

Analysing the cabinet through the framework of a network, Torun's research highlights a surprising outcome: the best leader in the cabinet may not actually be the most central. Instead, the optimum leader navigates an ongoing trade-off between occupying a central position in government, while still retaining access to all the information that flows through the network.

🤔 How does foreign aid influence voting behaviour?

Foreign aid can strengthen democratic accountability, but only when voters understand who is responsible for delivering aid-funded services.

Dr Ryan Jablonski from @lsegovernment examines how aid dependency shapes electoral behaviour and political accountability in developing democracies.

How does foreign aid shape electoral behaviour? 💭🧐

Listen to Dr. Ryan Jablonski, professor of political science @londonschoolofeconomics, discuss his new book: ‘Dependency Politics: how foreign aid shapes electoral behaviour’.

In it, Ryan explores the relationships between NGO’s, donors and politicians in aid-dependent countries, examining how aid dependency can change the way voters review political performance. Moving beyond a state-centric understanding of public service-provision, Ryan instead investigates the previously under-researched role of foreign aid in shaping how voters judge the work of their elected representatives.

📢 Public event announcement! 📢 | 2nd November 2026, 6.30-8pm | Tickets in bio!

“How do capitalist economies change over time? And what political consequences follow?”

Get ready for the latest public event hosted by the department of government! Come and see Peter A Hall, professor of European Studies at Harvard University, discuss his new book: ‘Governing Growth: the postwar transformations of capitalism and democracy’.

In it, Peter Hall traces the interactions between politics and economics in Western democracies over the past eighty years, identifying a series of profound shifts in the political economies of Europe and the United States.

To do so, Hall develops the twin concepts of growth and representation regimes. Here, each growth regime represents the successive result of public policies interacting with the strategies of private firms, where each growth regime is accompanied by a distinctive representation regime which determines whose voices have the most influence over public policy.

Then showing how these two regimes interact, Hall develops a new account of the processes through which political economies change over time. In doing so, Hall outlines three postwar growth regimes: an era of modernization, from 1945 to about 1975; an era of liberalisation, from 1980 to the late 1990s; and an era of knowledge-based growth, beginning at the turn of the century.

His sweeping analysis sheds new light not only on the relationship between capitalism and democracy, but also on the roots of our contemporary political dilemmas.
