This is what happens when kids eat what the family eats.

You don’t need to hire a picky eating expert.

Just start making family meals the default.

Kids learn through consistent exposure, repetition, and by watching the adults around them.

Just a heads up, that may mean changing what’s on your own plate, too.

Parenting is full of modeling, and in my experience, most of the changes we make for our kids end up making us better humans.

When you build your kitchen around familiarity, repetition, and a little variety, putting together a healthy dinner doesn’t require starting from scratch every night or spending hours meal prepping on the weekends.

You can make simple, healthy meals by assembling ingredients your family already loves.

Pasta night never looks exactly the same in our house. I switch up the shapes, sauces, vegetables, and salad ingredients.

There’s enough variety to keep things interesting for the adults, while giving the kids consistent exposure to familiar foods so we’re all comfortable with what’s on the plate.

So if you’re spending your Sundays chopping every vegetable in your fridge, or planning for special ingredients you need to buy, you might be making things harder than they need to be.

Follow along as I share how becoming a twin mom forced me to rethink the way I feed my family, find efficiencies in the kitchen, and make dinner easier without sacrificing our health, budget, or enjoyment of meal time.

Just add content creation to the list of things I wish I was doing better.

Moms, I know this is a relatable feeling because how can we put our whole effort into everything that is required of us and also put our whole effort into our passions and goals?

Sometimes it’s the workout, sometimes it’s cooking a homemade dinner, sometimes it’s the business idea you’ve been thinking about for months, but each day, something is always getting put on the back burner.

Accepting that we can care deeply about a lot of things without being able to give all of them our full attention all at the same time is one of the realities of motherhood.

If I saw a friend in this situation I would say, “have some compassion for yourself.” So I’m trying.

A little progress, whenever we can find the time and energy, still counts.

Living proof that a healthy dinner doesn’t just mean animal protein, starch, and a vegetable.

When I get home, I check to see what vegetables and proteins we have on hand and build a meal around that.

The difference is that I commit to at least 4 food groups showing up on the plate every single night.

I don’t center meals around animal protein, instead I use food groups and prioritize variety.

Here‘a how I would group tonight’s ingredients:

starches & grains | QUINOA
nuts & seeds | CASHEWS
vegetables & greens | BRUSSEL SPROUTS, BROCCOLI, CUCUMBER
protein & legumes | TOFU, CHICKPEAS
healthy fat | OLIVE OIL
flavor builders | RICE VINEGAR, GARLIC SALT

Six different food groups in forty minutes!

Also a tomato got added to the salad last minute. 🤪

If you’re looking for an easier way to make healthy dinners realistic for your family, follow along!

Our whole family has been obsessed with trail mix.

We eat it as an afternoon snack or even as dessert after dinner.

I buy my own ingredients so I can make the flavor and ratios that I like best.

This week we’re snacking on a mix of:

- Roasted Salted Almonds (50% Less Salt)
- Unroasted Unsalted Pumpkin Seeds
- Unroasted Unsalted Pistachio Nutmeats
- Golden Raisins
- Organic Dried Cranberries

Everything from @traderjoes

You’re not behind, maybe you just haven’t started yet.

I’m not a runner. I do not get great enjoyment from running. But running is a barometer for me.

Whenever I run regularly, I see a dramatic improvement in my performance across my other interests and responsibilities.

The most I ever ran was training for a half marathon in my twenties and I had an extremely demanding job (plus a second job on top of that) but I was excelling and propelling myself forward because I was literally dragging myself on these long distances up steep hills.

It might not be running, but I bet you’ve got something that helps you shake off the dust and lock in.

Maybe this is your sign to start.

You’re not behind. It’s never too late. You just have to begin.

Should I start a series?

My Notes app is full of thoughts about what it’s really like to cook for a family of five, and how to balance all the things we want food to do for us.

To nourish us. To taste good. To look appealing. To bring some variety to the table. To make everyone happy. And to actually be realistic to pull off on a random Tuesday night.

Because cooking for a family isn’t just about nutrition, or even time management, it’s about finding a balance that works for your family and your lifestyle.

I have a lot of thoughts on this, and I’d love to share more of them here. Would you be interested?

That advice about leaving the house is great when the house you’re leaving is clean.

But when the house is a mess, you just dread going back.

I’ve got about 20 things on my to-do list today. Here’s hoping nap time is productive!

Big time hack: When you don’t know what to make for dinner, just make breakfast. 🥞

Always a winner in our house.

It may look like fall outside, but you can find me reliving our family’s summer trip to Hawaii. 🌺

I still can’t get over how great it was. And if you have little ones and you’re wondering whether a big trip is actually worth the effort, take this as your sign.

For reference, our oldest is 4 and the twins turned 2 while we were there.

I cannot overstate that months later, I’m still riding the high.

The time together, the slow days, the sunsets, and just getting to watch our kids hang out with each other in a new place. All of it.

Traveling with little kids isn’t always easy, but this trip was 100% worth it.

Start looking at those flights! 🌴

Note: I am not qualified to give financial advice but is it ever wrong to go to Hawaii?

Simple jobs to give your toddler at dinner time:

- Get the pasta out of the pantry
- Pull apart the hamburger buns
- Wipe down the table
- Set forks and napkins on the table
- Hand out samples of cheese
- Place condiments on the table
- Shout “TIME TO EAT!”
- Walk their plate to the counter when they’re finished

It doesn’t always make sense to do the whole song and dance with the kitchen tower.

But if you love giving your kids hands-on experience in the kitchen, there are lots of ways to help them feel like an important member of the household.

Getting them involved doesn’t have to mean teaching them how to cook. It just means giving them a little responsibility and a place in the family routine.
