Hey I’ve got an important update! It’s pretty crazy to say out loud but I’m going to be stepping away from the repair bench and my time at @albeardsellguitars with my last day being October 2nd.

I’ve been working here for 13 years. So much of what I know about guitar repair and guitar making comes from the time I’ve spent in this shop with Al and with the people who have come in to trust us with their instruments. I learned that I can happily spend an entire day sanding, scraping or doing fretwork and that there is no better way to spend the day than working on guitars. I think I figured that out when I took @hammtoneguitars guitar making course way back in 2011 too. In the time that I’ve worked here I’ve also built a number of guitars in my own shop as @roger.guitars which is what I’m going to be focusing on. I still plan on doing some repair as well so stay tuned and I’ll have some more info about how that’s going to work. I’m super appreciative of my time here, and of everyone who has trusted me with their instrument. Big thanks to my supportive wife @sarahgoddard40 who also took this picture! by @lucasrogerstringworks

1964 Fender Jaguar recently completely with new frets and a bone nut. A very clean guitar with plenty of cool sounds. I don’t usually gravitate towards neck pickups but with this guitar I was playing the neck pickup the whole time.

I spent way too much money upgrading the world's worst guitar by @lucasrogerstringworks

A Fender Duo Sonic from 1962 with a fresh re-fret. The original frets were very low and very worn. My preference would be to true the fingerboard when the frets are out but this customer really wanted to keep the look of the fingerboard as it was. Luckily this neck wasn’t that warped and understood that a bit more fret material might come off when levelling the new frets.

Here’s one of my favourite guitars I’ve ever worked on. I always love getting to work on family guitars. Guitars that have been in one family since new that get passed down and repaired. Lots to talk about this one so bear with me or just skip the rest.

The body of this guitar was in pretty good shape overall with the original bridge plate being totally fine. The bridge was lifting and there were a few side cracks and lighting back brace ends that needed attention. I had the feeling that the side cracks had been worked on before but I did glue them with hide glue and reinforce them with some small mahogany cleats. Two back braces were reset also with hide glue. The bridge was lifting and was reset and the saddle that had been shaved down was removed.

The saddle had been shaved down really low because the neck angle was not great. The heel was pulling away from the sides already. Here’s where the fun starts. At some point the truss rod must have failed or broken and someone chose to replace it by making a new one and sending it through the neck, through the neck block and into the body. So to take the neck off I had to remove the non original truss rod and the metal barrel that was embedded into the neck at the headstock end. Once the neck was off I found the source of the mysterious rattle which was a washer and a nut that were bouncing around in the dovetail. First time I’ve seen that.

The neck on the J-45 is maple and I made a maple plug to fill where that barrel had been added and that allowed me to correct the headstock end of the truss rod after I made a new replacement truss rod.

Then it was time to replace the frets and complete the neck reset to get a proper saddle height at the bridge. In the end the guitar sounded amazing. It’s been on an exciting journey and it’s ready to play for years to come. Oh and I also made a new truss rod cover for it.

Many of the pictures are from during the process, or before work was done, especially the gap of the heel at the side. Ok now I’m done.

Early 60s Gibson Melody Maker. The owner of this guitar wanted a humbucker in place of the original pickup without making any serious alterations. It was determined that a dual rail style pickup would be made, and the original pick guard and electronics would be set aside in favour of new pots, jack and Bakelite pickguard. I played around with the guitar a bit before doing the work and I have to say the original pickup didn’t do much for me. I can understand wanting to make this change but have it be possible to just swap back in at any time. @albeardsellguitars wound the pickup, and I made the pickguard, wired up the new harness and set it up. The overall feel of this guitar was great. Some battle scars but pretty nice overall.

Sometimes we need permission to feel. @rachaelkilgour can help with that. She’s up and coming on the folk scene, in a big, folk tidal wave kind of way. Like in a Rolling Stone and Billboard magazine have written about her kind of way.

Canadian-American songwriter Rachael Kilgour presents her heartfelt new release, My Father Loved Me. The album was recorded in her late father’s native Ontario and was produced by JUNO-award winning and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Rose Cousins.

In the spare and often gutting language for which she is known, Kilgour gives us a complex portrait of a man seen through his daughter’s eyes. The record poses questions about belonging, inheritance, and grief and triumphantly affirms the value of one ordinary working man’s life.

On stage Kilgour expertly balances her poignant, literate songs with her quick wit, landing somewhere between a comedy special and a funeral. Listeners can expect to laugh, weep, and reflect on their own relationships with fatherhood, mortality and grief.

Kilgour was the 2015 Grand Prize Winner of the NewSong Music Competition and a 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest Winner, and has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Her oft-noted “unapologetic lyrics” (Rolling Stone) and “master crafted indie folk” sensibilities (Billboard) are on full display in this latest collection of delicately woven songs.

A phenomenal Silvertone Jupiter with the original case and sleeping bag / party dress cover. Very little play wear on this guitar but it had some quirks that needed correcting. The frets were loose and popping up in the middle, the strings were sitting way too low in the nut and there was no bridge ground. The pickups sounded great. Intonation decent, immaculate gold sparkle.

A Rickenbacker re-fret. Heavy warping that not even two truss rods could handle. They probably should have snuck a third truss rod in there somewhere.

Finished fingerboards and bound necks make for a bit more of a time consuming fret job but in this case it took the guitar from entirely unplayable to really great. I really hope that someday I find a way to enjoy doing finish work.

Partial re-frets. Are they worth it? Do they make sense? I believe there are times when it can work. That could be someone who only plays cowboy chords with a tight grip and the overall fret condition is good. More often than not I feel like it’s about the same amount of work as a full re-fret with worse results. #whatsonyourbench #luthier #guitarrepair #guitar #guitartalk #fretwork by @lucasrogerstringworks
