POSTS STORIES REELS

A lot of new folks have recently joined my adventures on here, it’s my birthday today (I’m 45) so figured it’s a good time to get reacquainted…

I haven’t always lived in rural West Texas, I grew up a beach kid in California born into a family of commercial artists (Dad was an art director and came from a family of blue collar Texans, and Mom an illustrator of ritzy and eccentric bohemian stock). I grew up in their studios, scribbling and painting along side them as they did ad campaigns for brands like Levi’s, all the California agricultural boards, and various brochure and book layouts (back in the late 1900’s, when they were hand drawn and painted).

When I was accepted to the Parsons School of Design (the only collage I applied for as a slacker 90’s teen) they both told me not to be an artist, that I “would starve,” and encouraged me to become a designer instead. It was the best and worst advice I’ve ever gotten to this day. But I heeded their wisdom and went into fashion design, and worked designing clothing for big corporate brands like The Gap and Old Navy (yes people actually design those clothes). I spent a decade in NYC with a successful career in the fashion world, but got burned out on the drama and stress that so often comes with it. At 28 I “retired,” and set off to travel (and paint) and see where life would find me.

I first came out to West Texas to visit my grandparents. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s and I wanted to hear her stories before she forgot them. Turns out my granddad needed help taking care of her, and since I was also now “retired,” I ended up staying for a few months to help and lived with the old folks. That’s another whole story in itself. Right around the time I was ready to move on, I met Mr. Wedeking, a 6th generation rancher, who is now my husband. And I’ve been here ever since.

There wasn’t much opportunity for an unknown painter to make a living in rural West Texas back in 2010, so I took a part time job as a public library director, and turned it into a full time career, expanding into archives and museum work where I became acquainted with our area’s rich history of cowboy lore and western art…(Continued ⬇️) by @lucilewedeking

BANDANA ORDERS OPEN NOW!!!

After doing a small test run for quality control (they look and feel amazing) and selling out the first batch @the.rodear, I’m pleased to announce that RANCH HORSE BANDANAS are now available to order on my website (click link in bio)!

I’m doing another pre order on these, to gauge how many to get this time. Priced at $25 each, they are 22x22” 100% cotton, made and printed in the USA. Also doing another G.I.V.E.A.W.A.Y. to help get the word out and share with everyone who might want one. The winner will get one bandana for themselves and another one for a friend they tag in the comments.

To enter…
✅ follow this account @lucilewedeking AND
✅tag a friend in the comments of this post who you’d like to share the second bandana with. Separate entries for each friend tagged will be counted.
✅Bonus entries for story shares and reposts (set to public and tag @lucilewedeking so I can see it).

Entries close this Sunday, August 9th at midnight.

Once again, this contest is not connected to Instagram, bla bla bla. Also going to note, @jamesmdecker (our last contest winner) already has a bandana and will not be counted… so he can not win again even if he wants to generously tag friends… but YOU can tag all your friends, hijack this post like he did last time, and up your chances! Grateful for all the love y’all keep showing me on here!!! ✨❤️✨ by @lucilewedeking

UPDATE… Print pre orders are now live and available on my website! Ask and ye shall receive. So grateful for all the wild support on this post!

A few years ago I made a silly video of a digital collage on one of my sketches, in promotion for @allsupsstores Summer Sips campaign. Today that collage finally came to life with a wash of acrylic paint.

When I was informed by my buddy, @jamesdecker (our mayor and published Allsup’s aficionado) that I was invited to be an artist at this year’s @stamfordartfoundation Show and Sale, it was also personally requested that I have one of my Allsup’s themed artworks showcased at the venue. If you are familiar with The Texas Cowboys Reunion you know the event goes hand in hand with late night Allsup’s burrito runs. I’m honestly surprised the chain hasn’t sponsored the @tcrrodeo yet, that’s how many burritos we’re talking. But I guess they don’t need to, because last year they sold out and an unofficial emergency was had in Stamford, TX!

I’m pleased to include this new Allsup’s piece in this year’s art show and am already planning on outdoing myself with another one next year. Allsup’s and TCR is a tradition long standing, and a new one for me in my first year showing at SAF.

Two new Santa Muertes will be making their debut at @kuehlfineart @armitchellmuseum one week from today, in my duo show with @evictor.art “Electric Rainbows,” opening reception November 6th from 5-8 pm.

I’ll be bringing a few more, as well as some of my vivid desert landscapes. Looking forward to seeing y’all in Trinidad! by @lucilewedeking

“A Last Pour, Yorick” - oil on linen, 24x18”, finished in a vintage stingray leather and gold leaf frame at 27x22” - will be available to view and purchase at The Great Western Fringe @coprogallery, opening November 7th in Santa Monica.

I’m not going to lie, I am a little sad to see this one leave the studio (swipe to see it framed, it’s glorious). It’s one of my favorite works to date, painted on @raymarpanels L84C Artfix Belgian linen. I spared no expense in investing in my time and the best materials for this piece, and I’m happy to say it paid off in all the detail that I was able to capture on this super refined surface. I had so much fun hiding little jokes and Easter eggs among the labels and other ephemera in this bar scene. I can’t wait to see it hanging up in the gallery!!! by @lucilewedeking

First Friday in November is going off like fireworks with the dynamic duo of @evictor.art and @lucilewedeking ! Don’t miss it and the second month of Resonance at the @armitchellmuseum !

So I did something kinda stupid tonight… earlier this week I watched @glenndean’s interview with @loganmaxwellhagege (two of my favorite living artists), talking about Glenn’s upcoming show “Passages,” @maxwellalexandergallery, that opened yesterday… Congrats, Glenn!

Somewhere in their super boring talk🙄, filled with hats🤠, Glenn was discussing painting on sight, and using memories vs photos, to reference a composition. He mentioned you could always check back to look at John Ford’s “The Searchers” (but you probably shouldn’t) to find a cool view.

Well, my rural flat land West Texas dumb ass (who can barely travel, because of tending to pure bred Brangus cows and the 6th generation Wedeking children that raise them) did just that… I sketched a still, and imagined more . And here we are… in paint… and my Cowboy Chemtrails are back again!

I’m kinda digging it, even though it looks nothing like John Ford’s Monument Valley, and that’s perfect.

Fun fact, (sorry Glenn and Logan) my notorious Grandma Pat, who died too young, well before I was born (from partying too hard, cigars, drink, belly dancing and nymphomania🥰), bought John Ford’s old Rancho house after mom and her siblings were young adults, and raised her Arabian horses there. Mom visited again earlier this year and told me an artist owns it now. Oddly full circle, as always. Maybe one of these days I’ll go visit it too.

Anyway, the painting’s not done yet, I just started it today/yesterday (I don’t know it’s past midnight, and as an artist I am largely nocturnal now)… but it’s going to be in my upcoming duo show with @evictor.art, “Electric Rainbows” at the @kuehlfineart gallery at the @armitchellmuseum, opening November 6th.

My whole premise for this show is to use bright color and have fun with it. Check, and check!!!

Many thanks to @glenndean for giving me some unwarranted inspiration. I’m always up for a dare, and this one was worth it! Check out their interview, on the @maxwellalexandergallery webpage. I wish more folks were making content like this. Cheers! by @lucilewedeking

Don’t mind the glare, just finished my final glaze layer on “A Last Pour, Yorick” - oil on linen, 24x18” - and I’m thinking it’s done and ready to sign!

This painting will be available to collectors at “The Great Western Fringe,” curated by @sonyapalencia and @nentopia at the @coprogallery in Los Angeles, opening reception 6-10 pm November 7th.

Excited to be making another trip out to California this year, it’s going to be one hell of a show!

Color blocking “Get In, Loser!” from sunup to sundown today. Flip for progression shots. After all the detail on my last painting, I thoroughly enjoyed switching it up from a size 2 to a size 12 brush and letting loose on this big canvas. Can’t wait to lay in my darks and all the refinement next! by @lucilewedeking

So many little brush strokes. All coming together. by @lucilewedeking
