Me realizing I need a professional account handle now 🤧

I am a current 4th med student at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY 👩🏻‍⚕️ I used to be a general surgery/derm PA prior to my career change ⚕️

When I started working as a surgery PA at 22 years old, I never would have imagined I’d be starting my plastic surgery residency 10 years later 🙈

Now that I am in my final year of medical school, I want to take this time to reflect on my journey in medicine. The road thus far has not only been filled with so much uncertainty, self doubt and stress, but also a renewed passion for taking new steps towards the future I want.

At first, it felt impossible to leave my well paying job to try to matriculate into medical school. Then, when I decided to commit to plastics, it seemed like an implausible competitive speciality too difficult to match into.

But here I am, so incredibly grateful to come back and start my training to become a plastic surgeon at Penn State! I had such a remarkable time during my Sub-I and I cannot wait to learn even more from such fantastic faculty and residents 😭

These past few months I’ve had the incredible honor to travel all over the country, learning at my away-rotations at extraordinary hospitals, presenting at conferences and meeting new and talented colleagues. I learned so many new skills ranging from different concepts in plastics surgery to finally driving a car 🚗😂

I cannot thank my mentor, Dr Otterburn, enough for opening the doors and giving me these opportunities; the amazing and overqualifed ⭐️ladies at Otterburn lab, my incredible co sub-Is, my friends and family for supporting me and helping me get through this year. Most importantly, my husband 🥺 who chauffeured me around, fed me, loved me, consoled me and was there for me every step of the way.

I know its a long post but tldr: I’m so emotional and grateful to continue my path to be a plastic surgeon at the one and only Penn State!! Thank you everyone who has been and WILL continue to be there for me 🥰❤️ by @lucywei_pa_md
