Yesterday was very special to us at Danza Orgánica. We performed a piece very dear to our hearts, at the @massqball . This piece is dedicated to Mar’s father, who grew up working at a sugarcane plantation (cañaveral) in Puerto Rico— and to all plantation workers in PR and the USA. This piece exists within the larger context of our work: Proyecto Melaza (2017), which illustrates the history of colonization in PR- with a vision towards liberation and decolonization. ✨

I (Mar) am eternally grateful to my father, who wrote about his experience growing up at el Hato Candal in Fajardo / Rio Grande. He wrote in poetry form, which I really appreciate, and look forward to continuing to share his experiences- and those of the campesinos who also worked in the plantation. I am also eternally grateful to my company, Danza Orgánica, for their amazing artistry, contributions, and dedication, to make this work a reality. Shoutout also to @m.santimar , also member of DO- who in addition to dance, accompanied us with his nourishing Bomba drumming. 🙏🏾

To wrap up our work, we finished in celebration dancing in community with those who joined us. So fun! In times of struggle and difficulty, we need to remember to find joy and to be in community. Thank you for dancing with us!

We are very grateful to all who came, and look forward to sharing this iteration again soon.

Con amor,

Mar @visionariadelmar

Everything is a performance.

June 12 is known as Philippine Independence Day, though arguably this freedom was quickly taken by the US who performed itself as protagonist. The mock battle between Spain and US in Manila Bay is a performance of a duel with an ending already planned. The 10 years of genocide on the Filipino people is the edited version of the script that we may never fully know of, censored so we can continue to believe the propaganda. Everything is a performance.

I’ve been thinking about our recent performance of Primx, a celebration of cousin-ship between Puerto Rican family (the Santiago Marcelino) and a Filipino family ( AniMalayaWorks) and how authenticity was sought through out our process. We presented our testimonies by portraying ourselves and our genuine connection onstage.

Thank you MAPfund, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, BAAD! ( Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance ) and Leeway Foundation for your generous support.

We are officially 30 DAYS away from the premier of PRIMX at BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance @baadbronx! The creation process of this evening length work has been much like making a stew. @ani_malayaworks and I began this process in the summer of 2022, and like any good sancocho, we have been letting it simmer, taste testing and adding more ingredients to this rich process. We are so grateful for the collaboration and dedication from dance artists Athena Turek ( @athenaturek ), Marsell Anhel Chavarria ( @marsell.simone ) and Malaya Ulan ( @malaya_ulan) who have been part of this process for over two years! We are also incredibly excited and grateful to welcome musical and vocal collaborators Jorge Arce ( @jorgearce.humano ), Sasi Marcelino ( @bankonsasi )and Andrew Martinez ( @dru.seko ) ! Thank you to BAAD for your continued support!
We also want to extend very special thank you to @themapfund for your support since 2022! #MapGrantee2022

For the past 3 years we’ve been learning from each other’s cultures. And we learn from each other, from elders, and from cultural bearers. Now we’re preparing for BAAD! (Supported by MAPfund) May 31st but we while we are grateful for the support from MAP, we need your help to fully fund this production and all it’s components and collaborators, including our musical and vocal collaborators.

“Healing, after all, cannot be conjured by new policies and laws, but can only emerge from new poetics.” - Ruha Benjamin (professor of African American Studies, Princeton University, from the foreword in the book, My AfroRican State of Soul by @lucasrivera247 )

Grateful to the Paul Robeson House & Museum, the West Philadelphia Arts Council, and The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation for the fall 2024 West Philadelphia Creative Grant (@robesonhousephl ) for supporting our ongoing neighborhood offerings including the Philadelphia Fringe Festival project, Special Topics: Blade and Barrel held at @studio34philly . This is a seed to a long going dialogue. The resistance through art making continues. Stay tuned for our Primx premiere at @baadbronx in May.

Sharing some photos by @tserendipity in our element-the north Philly backyard rehearsals. Some images are from our @studio34philly offerings… conjuring resistance dialogues through our bodies. Some Bomba, some Kali driven.

We may be cousins through blood memories but now we come together and let’s go 2025, watch over us.
