Conceived as both an academic institution and a catalyst for national STEM development, the Vietnamese–German University (@vietnamesegerman.uni) campus about 30 miles outside of Ho Chi Minh City reflects the ambitions—and the challenges—of a rapidly transforming country. Funded through a World Bank grant and developed as a collaboration between the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training and the German Hessen State Ministry of Science and Art, the public, state-owned university offers a dual Vietnamese–German degree, with a focus on science, engineering, and technology. After winning a 2014 international competition to design a ground-up campus for 12,000 students, Machado Silvetti (@machadosilvetti)’s task was not simply to create a master plan across 125 acres, but to give physical form to an emerging model of international academic partnership. Capitalizing on the expertise of German academic partners, the school aims to ready graduates for the rapid scientific and technological growth of Vietnam’s economy.

At the time of the competition, the rural landscape of Binh Duong Province offered little context for a university—surrounding land was an expanse of fields slated for development. Jeffry Burchard, partner at Machado Silvetti, explains, “We were creating an entirely new university campus in the middle of a placeless environment, well outside Ho Chi Minh City, which meant we needed to produce some kind of identity for the school at the campus scale.” Rather than replicate a traditional, inward-looking academic enclave, the architects sought to incorporate attributes of an urban environment through the density of buildings and proximity of different uses, “to produce the context that cities offer, which is lots of things nearby,” says Burchard.

We were all so delighted to celebrate Machado Silvetti’s 40th anniversary over the weekend. From MS-themed games to blissfully short speeches to incredible food to reminiscing to laughing to marveling at all the extraordinary architecture we’ve been privileged to create over the last four decades, the party was one for the ages. We are so grateful to everyone who came from far and wide to celebrate our storied past, our vibrant present, and our extraordinary and exciting future. by @machadosilvetti

We are so thrilled by the Architect’s Newspaper’s incredible coverage of our recent leadership transition news. Yesterday, we announced that Jorge Silvetti and Rodolfo Machado were stepping back after forty years of firm leadership, and that Stephanie Randazzo Dwyer and Jeffry Burchard are the new owners and firm leaders. As Kristine Klein writes, “The Boston-based firm has established itself as a forerunner in adaptive reuse and building in historic contexts, having amassed a robust portfolio of museum, educational, and cultural projects. New leadership will remain active in the realms of architectural education, practice, and technology, as was the case for Machado Silvetti in years past.”

As we embark on this new era, we remain delighted by and grateful for our many partners, valued friends and colleagues, and collaborators.

The @whalingmuseum tells the story of American whaling, a history that shaped a city and an industry. As the museum grew, visitors needed a clear navigation system.

RSM Design updated the museum’s wayfinding to guide visitors through the galleries while respecting the character of the building. We also developed a donor recognition program that honors the supporters of this significant expansion.

The result is one holistic design system, where every gallery and every individual’s contribution is celebrated in the visitor’s journey.

Landscape Architecture Magazine takes a closer look at Downtown Cary Park in its September issue, exploring how the park has become both a beloved public destination and an ongoing experiment in biodiversity, stewardship, and urban ecology.

Designed by OJB, the park transforms the site’s existing topography into a landscape where water, habitat, recreation, and public life work together. Its stormwater system manages runoff from 18 acres, while an exceptionally diverse planting strategy continues to evolve as the park’s horticulture team studies how species perform, adapt, and support wildlife over time.

Since opening in 2023, Downtown Cary Park has also helped demonstrate what investment in landscape can mean for a growing community, with the article reporting a 156 percent increase in visitors to downtown Cary over the three years the park has been open.

We’re honored to see the evolving life of the park featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine and to see how thoughtful design and long term stewardship can continue working together long after opening day.
