“In all things, we should aim towards beauty, goodness, and truth.” — Michael Curtis.

The first time my work gets published in a magazine! And not just any magazine: American Essence. Very grateful for this opportunity, and even more thankful for my luck to take photos of such an inspiring story. 📸

I took photos of Mr. Curtis on a beautiful morning this spring. He was so enthusiastic about his work, his values, and life in general. It was refreshing and uplifting to photograph him. He didn’t rush—offering me his trust to portray his story.

“Michael Curtis is a sculptor, painter, historian, architectural designer, and poet who has taught and lectured at institutions that include the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art and the National Gallery of Art.
His paintings and statuary are held in over 400 public and private collections, including the Library of Congress, the National Portrait Gallery, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Curtis has created statues and medals of major American historical figures, including Davy Crockett, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Justice Thurgood Marshall.”

This week I photographed events held by Falun Dafa practitioners commemorating their fellow practitioners who were persecuted to death by the Chinese Communist Party in China.

The persecution is ongoing and July 20th marks the 27th year since it began in 1999.

In the evening, during the candlelight vigil, among the hundreds of practitioners wearing yellow t-shirts and the many passersby, three little girls caught my eye as they ran around, carefree and affectionate.

To me, the girls represent the kind hearts and innocence of practitioners who persevere through the CCP’s atrocities, taking a nonviolent approach to bring awareness of what is happening in China.
