Greetings from London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 by @madisonhadfield
This last January-April I got to study abroad in the holy land!! I’d love to share a few thoughts. Right before we left, we got to visit Shepard’s hill and a grotto where Christ may have been born. As we sat and pondered there, the bomb alarms went off. The safest place to be according to our security guards was the cave I had just been in. They directed our party of 90 into the cave, and we sat together as the iron dome destroyed missiles overhead. I was honestly terrified. In the midst of that fearful event, our group started singing nativity hymns such as “away in a manger”. I felt so much better. I think this experience will be one I reflect on regularly throughout my life. Where can I turn when the metaphorical missiles of life are firing overhead? To Christ. He brings peace, purpose, and joy. On my study abroad I had the opportunity to take a class on Judaism and on Islam. I loved both immensely. Being in the holy land showed me that we all have much more in common than we think. One of our professors taught us the principle of “holy envy”, which means admiring the beautiful ways that those of other faiths worship. I have holy envy for the discipline of Muslims fasting for Ramadan and for the faith and devotion of Jews as they prepare for the Sabbath. I am so grateful for the example of my professors (Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and non-practicing) as they demonstrated respect for the beliefs and lifestyles of others. I likewise have a deep appreciation for all the people I met in the holy land, wether in the old city, at the Sea of Galilee, or in the Jerusalem center itself. It was a privilege to learn from and be edified by all those around me. I can’t say enough about how grateful I am for the people I met and the life lessons I learned. Jerusalem will forever have a piece of my heart <3 by @madisonhadfield
