I had the great opportunity to visit @timbercreekfarmer ‘s farm last week with my class taught by @lizensz and learn about sheep, wool processing, and natural dyeing! wool is such a gorgeous material, and wool processing reminds me a lot of mulberry processing, both of which I’ve grown to love. by @maggieletvinstudio

With this article coming out with the latest update on this from @baltimoresun, it’s time to talk more about this site, this cause, and this body of work.

I have been using alternative photography as a tool to explore Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park, a historic pet cemetery five minutes away from my childhood home. The site, home to both human and animal remains, is currently targeted as a site for development of a gas station and car wash.

The video shown is a cut together clip from the Howard County Planning Board meeting, where they voted with an unfavorable recommendation for the rezoning of Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park. Recently, the Zoning Board, which is the next step in the process, voted 3 to 2 that there was a zoning error in 2013 where the site was zoned as TOD (basically high density housing) instead of B2 (general business). The discrepancy comes from zoning distances in relationship to public transportation. However, the developer that is hoping to build the gas station owns the adjacent lot, and has already taking advantage of their self proclaimed zoning error to build apartment buildings within viewing distance of the cemetery. As described in the first meeting, “it was okay when they wanted to build apartments, but now not okay now that they want to build a gas station.” The rezoning doesn’t mean that they are immediately breaking ground, there are several more steps, but we should be alarmed and ready to take action. Rosa Bonheur Memorial Park has a long and complicated history (it was the first recorded cemetery to allow humans to be buried alongside their pets!) of mismanagement and abuse, but that does not mean that the humans and animals that rest there deserve to be disturbed for a gas station. This project is a result of capitalism and greed.

I have a few smaller prints available for sale, and hope to continue to raise awareness of this site and this cause. DM if interested and I can share more.
